Asus N56VJ-DH71 is the model I have narrowed down for purchase. can someone look at the specs and mabe someone with asus experience please help me make a decision. will the HDD write speed be high enough @5400RPM or is that sub par. If its too slow should I upgrade or will I be fine Plugging in an external via sataUSB. i am very very new to daw and am not sure how specs affect such things or how the software by asus will manage performance. Sorry if the info is out there but I cannot find anything pro con for this model anywhere. its frustrating  THANKS IN ADVANCE
ps:PLEASE BE DESCRIPTIVE AS IN TALKING TO A 12YR OLD LOL. BTW THAT IS MY MAX PRICE RANGE.

I found on the forum, this was a prior problem with older ASUS and im curious if this is still a problem.

The biggest flaw was that there was no way to turn off the Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology (EIST) which is a clever bit of technology that steps the processor speed up and down depending on the load. Sounds like it could be useful but with audio software the result is that the CPU meter bounces around all over the place and often shoots into the red and causes a glitch way before it you've maxed it out. This can only be disabled or adjusted at BIOS level and there were no entries available.

Going with a laptop eh? It's fine. Actually if all you're going to use it for is audio it's massive overkill. What follows are somewhat random thoughts...

  • Get an extended warranty. I've owned four laptops now, treat them like they're made out of eggshells, and they STILL break. They overheat... which is bad for the HDD and the motherboard, and you can't just swap out components like a desktop.
  • Economize where you can. If you are just getting started you are not going to believe all the different ways you are going to find to spend money.
  • A 5400RPM HDD is fine. I don't care what the performance psychos say. Sure a faster HDD has it's benefits, and a SSD is awesome, but be careful and read the reviews... not all drives are created equal.

Incidentally it's a lot cheaper to buy a SSD and stick it in a laptop then to buy a laptop with a SSD factory installed. For some reason SSDs that come preinstalled cost four times more then they should.
