LOGIC ABUSER
Asus Motherboards

I've been using a CUSL2 with a 800mhz p3 for several years, but like most of us Computer recorders, its time for that upgrade. This board will only upgrade to 1gig.
I want to stick with ASUS because I and others have proven it reliable for recording. I like to stay behind the latest greatest on CPU's due to price so Im thinking maybe a 2gig with a board that will take up to a 3gig.
So, any of you ASUS users have a reccomendation on a great ASUS board ??
Or perhaps an ABIT will be ok too.
{intel P4 FCPGA preferred}

Yeah, i got it running on my PC right now. It's a nice board(not that I have much experiences to compare to) but it sure hasn't crashed and frozen yet (except for my previous issue with Sonar, but that's a dif story) and the installation went fast and smooth, too.
I really like it, and check newegg.com for price comparison.

Asus boards

Asus P4PE. Have a brand new one in my hand now. My new PC will be configured around it.

This board is very versitile and cutting edge. It's gotten great reviews in the last couple months.

Features include:
P4 hyperthread capability
True DDR333 support
SATA compatibility
6 USB 2.0 ports
Firewire
S/PDIF
ATA133
No integrated video to complicate matters

$149 at www.newegg.com

I bought the Matrox G550 video card to mate.

Keep reading before you buy. Investigate. This decision is one you'll live with or die with.

Thanks for that info....I am quite comfortable and confident in ASUS. I prefer not to have onboard audio though, like the onboard video as you stated will complicate things. Im assuming the P4Pe is the newest from ASUS which can be a little scary not knowing how it has performed with audio apps.
When you say good reviews, are you reffering to audio apps or just overall performance ?
Im going to try and dig for some test results on audio apps. with the P4Pe.

Since you mentioned onboard S/PDIF. What do you do with it? I just leave it sitting in the box since I have already for S/PDIF in/outs on my card, but, if I wanted, is that possible to put it in and have 2 stereo S/PDIF in/outs???
Thanks

ASUS and onboard sound.

You may be hard pressed to find an ASUS board at the top of the heap that doesn't have onboard sound. Onboard video, though, is not so prevalent.

What's the S/PDIF for? I don't know. My Tascam 788 outputs S/PDIF, though. I suppose it may be an important feature if your card doesn't have it.

The Asus N-Force boards are good if you are on a budget, in built network, sound and grafix, all of which you can bypass if you want.

I use mine as a Nuendo based DAW and have had no probs whatsoever.

I have the Asus P4b266 and it has been great - rock solid. I would get the p4b533 without any hesitation.

I don't worry too much about onboard audio - its easy to disable in the bios if it is a problem.

Not to go against the grain...

We all know someone with a certain board that runs flawlessly. Perhaps the N-force is such a board for you, klytus. I'm not too swift on every combination out there but have heard of config problems with nVidia based boards. I know guys that do carefully select everything based on common 'knowns,' yet still have ongoing config issues that never resolve. The opposite is likely true, too.

To isolate features, I'd go to ASUS website:
http://www.asus.com/mb/mbindex.htm

The P4B533 series has a lot of different models. The basic one is more limited compared to the P4B533-E and P4B533-V. These, and the P4PE have gotten great review from audio nuts. You can also type P4PE review (or whatever) into your search engine and start reading a wealth of info. I'd strongly recommend it before buying blindly from a few scattered recommendations.

Also, check out:

for some experienced audio system builders.

Happy Holidays and have fun shopping!

The P4PE basic board will not support serial ATA. If you want to have a second recording HD, get one of the two upgrade models. I got a P4PE/GBL. The best price I found was at AXION.

I do use 2 HD's. What is the other upgrade model, I dont see a model GBL. Explain a little more if ya dont mind.

Three different P4PE models

The following link (as of today) shows the three P4PE models currently available. This link actually lists five items because NewEgg currently also offers two refurbished models available in addition to the three new ASUS models. Disregard them.
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=p4pe

The low end P4PE is listed at $130.
The higher end board (I bought) is $150. SATA capable.
The highest end model is $163. The only added feature vs. the $150 board is gigabyte lan instead of 10/100. Save the $13 unless you have a gigabyte lan network.

The only thing that dissappointed me was that I bought a Maxtor ATA/133 drive and it may not work at ATA/133 by itself, but rather only in a RAID array.

The SATA capability, though, will blow away ATA/133 and will likely be my eventual upgrade.

Happy Holidays!
