How do these two samplers stack up? The Ensonique ASR 10, and the Emu E4K (which I think is quite similar to the E synth.
would be used with an emphasis on hip hop type music.

Peace

I used to own the EPS 16 + (similar to the asr-10)and went to the emu e6400 ultra. Bad move. The Eos (emu's operating sytem) is so counter intuitive that it will definetly kill any inspiration. You have to create a sound and configure the sequencer to use a metronome. There is no pattern mode. When you sample, you have to do about 10 things to get the sample on a sequencer track. Everything that should be simple is complicated.

After 6 months of being non productive, I sold the damn thing. I sold it to a studio owner whoe just wanted to use it as a sample playback instrument for his $1500. orchestra sample cds. It seems this is the most popular use for it (It does sound incredible).

What made me realize that things didn't have to be this complex was when i bought a korg es1. This thing was crazy fun! That's my barometer for making beats, gotta be fun. But I also needed something more advanced than the korg, so now I'm a proud owner of a Yamaha Motif. It has a learning curve as well but the difference is that you're rewarded when learning something new.

Whatever you get, go to the music store and make a beat. Mess around with it and see if it works for you.
