Dear all, days ago I asked suggestion for a easy software sequencer. Majority of advises were to go for SONAR.
After having had issues in making it recording audio i noticed that SONAR does not support ASIO.
I temporarely solved forcing him to use MME that my audio card support but the audio card itself is optimized on asio 2.0.

What shall I do ?? Keep SONAR of which I like the interface abd becessarely use it in MME or go for other software sequencer ?? And which one then ??

Tks a lot

No a new soundcart

On the contrary the soundcard is the must.
I want a software able to perform with it.
The question was if I shall limit my choice of softwares that only support asio or also MMe (sonar) will be decent quality ??
Tks

Why don't you tell us what sound card it is?

Personally, I would not touch and hardware that does not support WDM nowadays. I learned my lesson with a cheaper sound card in Sonar last year...

Sonar DEPENDS on WDM drivers to funtion properly- its that simple! You cannot take advantage of the full capabilities of Sonar with MME drivers (DXi plug-ins and DXi softsynths).

Papoola - see my response to you in the Newbie section. You really shouldn't double post.

the sound card is....

RME 96/8. Not much known in USA but highly reputed here in Europe.
It is a FULL digital card with NO converters on board.
As a Converter I use and out of the PC box named DI-Port from MindPrint.

I will investigate it could be that RME released the WDM drivers.
they are very well known to issue new drivers very quickly....

The OS is Windows Me.
Tks

NO wdm for ME...u need 2000 or XP...RME...how do u like it? i know those cards are pricey i wonder if the sounds is worth the price? considering u heard other high end sound cards before

rme performance and price

Here in Europe are not expensive I guess.
I bought it on line for about 250 USD.
The sound I cannot compare with pro dounds as I had a hardware multitrack recorder before.

This is a huge improvement to my hear.
Tks

As teacher says, forget WDM if you're running Win ME. I run ME also, and have tried on several occaisions to install WDM drivers for my Delta 1010. They just don't want to play nice together.

I use Sonar with the MME drivers, which I can live with since I don't need super low latency. Good program, btw.

yeah, WDM is supposed to be a win2k and XP thing, but I've gotten WDM to work with windows ME...i'm using WDM drivers for a soundblaster and a delta 66.....i'd switch out the OS, if i were certain that it would make BOTH my system more stable, AND the cpu meter go down.

I have an Audiophile and I'm using WDM drivers with Cakewalk Home Studio on ME.I must be doing something wrong because it works perfectly.

Well, I can't say things are working perfectly, but they are working well enough to keep me from running out and getting win2k or XP.

One of the nice things about WDM is the low latency, can you take advantage of this in Home Studio? Does Home Studio even have a way to choose WDM drivers? If not, you are likely using MME.

Yup,Home Studio 2002 absolutely can use WDM drivers.Matter of fact they are recommended if you want to use soft synths. When you run the wave profiler,if it detects a card that uses wdm drivers it will profile only that card.If you are using 2002 read the manual,if you are not using it maybe you should check it out.

BTW,at 24bit my latency is about 30ms.I can run it as low as 7ms but I get occasional dropouts.I haven't recorded at 16bit but I think it would handle very low latency extremelly well. This is on a machine that has not been optimized for audio.I don't actually use dxi synths so I can live with 30ms latency.

Maybe you are thinking of Home Studio 9 or some other earlier version?

Actually, I wasn't sure which version of Home Studio you are using or what the latest version has to offer....I've only used Sonar...I'm aware that cakewalk is redesigning some other products using the sonar engine...just haven't checked em out , since i have sonar.......anyway, thanks for the info...

J,if I had sonar I wouldn't bother with HS either.I have heard 2002 desribed as "sonar lite" so I think they must be somewhat alike. For now 2002 is more than enough for me but someday i'll probably make the leap to sonar.I'm very impressed with the power of 2002 for an inexpensive program so I still have a ways to go before I "outgrow"it but I'm sure the day will come eventually.

i'm curious as to what latency you get with Sonar with wdm drivers (Iknow there are other factors involved in latency).I really should optimized my computer for audio but I tried once and I really screwed it up and I had to do a system restore.I am definately a computer dummy as I got my first one last fall at the age of 46 and had no experience with them before that.Definately a learn as I go experience.

i've been running with 2 ms latency...but get a lot of dropouts...next time i run sonar maybe i'll try what you suggested and drop to 10ms or more.

Thanks dude,2ms is pretty cool.Latency isn't really a big thing with me right now but I'm sure that someday it might be an issue as I dig deeper into the program and try out DXi soft synths. So far I've only recorded audio (I'm a midiot at present)but who knows what the future may bring?

RME audiocard support WDM !!!!

First thanks for all the reply.
I told anyone of you that my RME does not support WDM: NOT TRUE !!
Was my mistake.
I downloaded their Win 200 drivers and they Support WDM !!

What i I will do now.....install win 2000 and use SONAR that I like very much.

Not really tested yet but give me an excellent feeling that could be the sequencer of my choice. Nice interface, not too complex but complete !
Agree ???

PS: In the RME web site very nice general tech info not only on their special low latency softwares but on MIDI/usb advises
Give a look :www.rme-audio.de (various languages, no panic)
Cheers
