asio or midi?

Which is better quality for recording, asio driver setup or midi setup? I don't need any type of special effects. I have a home studio which consists of a good Dell xps high end laptop, a good Reaper DAW, an M-Audio M-track plus and a decent stereo for playback. I also us Band-In-A-Box for backing tracks. I can use either ASIO driver setup or a MIDI approach. Can someone advise me about the advantages/disadvantages of both?? I am a knowledgeable musician and a decent technician with very little experience with home recording.

thanks in advance
Howie

Hi,
I'm not sure I understand the question
Asio, I think, is an audio driver. Midi is an instruction protocol for digital instruments.
If you have an M-audio interface you're almost definitely better off using their drivers instead of Asio.

Midi doesn't have a 'quality' that can be measured. It's basically digital sheet music for virtual instruments.

Maybe come at this a different way and tell us what you're hoping to do?

You need to use the asio driver that came with the m-audio to record audio. The midi driver only runs the midi ins and outs on the interface. You should be able to use both at the same time, which one is in play depends on whether you are recording audio or recording midi information.

Do you play keys?

Weneed a bit more info on what exactly you are trying to record.

What Farview said. Most PC interfaces use ASIO drivers.

I think just about the only type of situation where you could use only MIDI drivers would be if you were outputting the MIDI tracks to external MIDI devices such as ROMpler keyboards or hardware synthesizers. Anything else-- virtual instruments, soft synths, etc.-- will need to use an audio driver to send their sound output to the computer's audio-out lines.

Yes, ASIO is the preferred driver for all PC audio work. MIDI just tells the soundcard/AI which note, how loud, etc you are playing.

ASIO will almost always give you the lowest latency, a matter of some importance with MIDI!

Dave.
