Ok so I finally got around to setting up all the recording stuff I got on my brothers drum set. We didn't have enough mic stands yet (they're still comin in the mail) so we didn't mic up the toms, so forgive the fact that they are a little quiet.

Overheads: left, mxl 990, right, AT cheapo mic
Snare:57
Kick: AKG d112

The funny thing is, the drumset is a 300$ pulse percussion plywood crap but after EQing it doesnt sound half bad. When I figure out how to replace the actual hits with samples (someone hook me up with drumagog!) then it should be better.

And dont be to harsh on the playing, he's only twelve and its just a section of a 20 minute clip of him jamming away. no metronome or anything.

whadda ya think?

You're getting a lot of clipping from the kick drum, and some really weird artifacts off the cymbols.

Not a bad first attempt. I can't say much. I won't even attempt to mic drums yet. I use a machine and call a pro when I want real drums.

You're getting there. You just need to practice a bit with mic positions and watch the clipping.

It all sounds like it clipped a lot. What are you recording into? Drums all need some serious tuning, too.
http://drumagog.com/download.htm -- free trial. I haven't downloaded it yet -- getting a new computer JUST for recording this weekend, I'll do it then. Also, if you've got something other than the 990 you could use as an OH, do it. They're very harshly bright.
Playing wasn't that bad, actually. :D.
But yeah. Different OH, get it to not clip, and tune up a bit.
