What do you guys think about the Rackmount ART TPS pre-amp?

Hummmm

There are a few other threads here on the board if you do a search.

I just bought a DPS (the TPS with added digital i/o) as a floor model for $202 (normally about $259). I haven't used the D/As yet, but I've read stellar things about them. My thinking is that the D/As are probably worth the extra 75 or so bucks if you've got 'em.

I am pretty impressed with it compared to my DBX mini toob pre (noisy thing!), and definitly next to my Behringer IMP preamps (way dry, and cold). Lots of various colorations from the V3 toob knob, and pretty clean solid state gain to my ears (going into my VS880 20bit HD recorder).

One gripe. The box hums. Not like noise through the outputs, but audibly buzzin bad enough that my B1 large condensor picked it up really noticably in the room (I don't have a rack yet). I weighted it down with some stuff and that helped insulate it and take away some case resonance. I'm guessing that it's the transformer.

Does anyone else that owns one of these ART rackmount boxes have one that humms pretty loud? It's almost bad enough that I want to make the store get me another one on the 30 day garauntee.

Is MISTERQCUE in the house? You seemed to like your TPS a while back on the other posts- does it buzzzzzzz audibly?

I recently got an ART TPS. There is absolutely no buzz from mine. I use it for acoustic/electric guitar directly into the TPS, or mic'ing an acoustic, and mic'ing my guitar amplifier. Each of these variations sounds good. I'm not seeing a lot of differences in the voicings settings but I haven't fully road tested yet. Overall it was well worth the $179 from Musician's Friend.

Got it from Sammy's last year @ 179.00 the unit is a decent, mid-of-the road pre offering basic uses as a mic pre & instrument DI.
Unit has a max gain of around 70-75db's for XLR connections and
approx 65-70db's for instrument connections to XLR(though specs
claim 5db's greater). I find it useful for providing a nice robust flavor on bass when I use the percussive-thumb/slap technique where clarity is needed in DI format and sufficient enuff when using SM57 mic'd cabs for rounded bottom (ample input pad around 18-22dbu's suitable for lo & hi sens mics). 1 fault I find in the unit is the Var Valve Voicing function, with it's limited parameter settings on instruments & vocals which does not provide transparency 1 is seeking thereby bypassing that function. The LIMITER function performs adequately allowing you to cleanly level the output signal prior to clipping.
On the FEW occasions I've used on vocs(KSM32 & Rode NT1) no outstanding depth or transparency nor so-called warmth (even with a 12AX7 triode integrated in it's circuitry) but a slight 2-3db mid-range boost/coloration on a female-alto,male-tenor and male-alto-soprano! Prob'ly suitable for rap/spoken word vocs!
As a DI, the unit performs with sufficient and adequate results!
The jury is still out on vocs. But it is a good addition to ones
pre arsenal!

Just my opinion!

I've always had bad experiences with ART.
Would not go anywhere near 'em.
PURE TRASH

I am borrowing one of these this weekend for a bass DI. I was thinking about using the other channel for snare or kick. Any thoughts on how well it will perform on these?

I hear ya' Wiseguy! That's the same way I feel about Behringer
mixers (not their outboard gear, just their suck-@ss MIXERS!!!)

Yo' coplinger, the TPS provides adequate presence and clarity
on bass in DI format and provides a more than decent perf on mic'd bass amps with no hint of added coloration on certain
bass-playing techniques.
Unfortunately, I can't speak on it's perf with a kit as I have not had the opportunity to do so!

Overall, IMO, it provides ample translation & transparency on bass (and rhythm gits) in both mic'd and DI functions!

I have used my TubeChannel on Kicks and Snares before. This is an earlier model with para EQ and an optical compressor. I like it alright. The pre does not have tons of headroom but it does sound good. It's not a Neve or an SSL channel strip but it does good for the dough and the tube character is pleasant.

Sounds a f*ck alot better than the two channel behringer that is my other pre.

I am a drummer and I like it ok. The compressor functions lack some of the timing that you would find on a real compressor, but real compressors cost real money too.
