Hello everyone
Im an amateur home recording guy, not much knowledge or experience other than what I perceive as the normal "trial and error" until it works to my liking. A friend of mine recently hooked me up with an ART Studio MP preamp to use with my Tascam Portastudio. My question is when I hook everything up and turn on the Phantom power so the mic works, the UV meter automatically jumps to the far right into the "red." Ive never been able to get it to waiver in the middle or "black." Everything seems to be operating fine and Im getting a decent enough result for what Im looking for but Id like to know why its jumping to the Red and how can I get it to not do that? Something tells me if I can get it back into the Black I may be able to achieve a higher gain input or better sound. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Pad the microphone or MP - your getting to much signal.

Hope it helps for I think that the Art only has a +20db switch!

Basically Im just recording acoustic and vocals, possibly some other acoustic instruments (upright bass, small percussion) but trying to avoid going direct into the Tascam with any of the guitars, etc. Trying to capture a room feel to the sound. Like I said everything sounds ok I think, but if I feel like if I can get that UV meter out of the red I may be able achieve better quality. I think :) Ill have to play around with more tonight.

If you dont mind, could you explain exactly what "padding" is? I have an idea but if someone asked me I wouldnt know what to say. Thanks so much.
