I am putting together my first digital studio and have an old ART FXR Elite effects processor. The only action it has ever seen is adding a bit of reverb to some vocals on my 4 track. Would I be better of using teh digital effects plugins and ditch this unit or would it be handy?

Try them both and see what you like the best:) Even cheap gear has its uses in a rack full of nice gear. The real question is how much do you really like it? Or is it jsut going to sit in your rack dormant.....

I suppose I could at least just put it in my rack, so it looks cool to my friends that come over to see my studio. They wouldn't know what it is any way, but it has a few flashing lights. :)

The FXR Elite is a pretty bad-sounding reverb, especially given some of the plugs available today.... about the only thing it would be ok on is for PA use, IMO.... you definitely don't want to be using it for recording (unless you're going for that lo-fi, metallic-reverb effect sound!)

the reverbs in it are o.k.and has much the same processor in it that all of the reverbs of that day something like digitech 256 and midiverb iii and such i believe. i hated programing mine. without the manual you never knew what effect knob did what to the lights.it wouldnt be a first choice for recording but could be usefull in a dirty drum or back-up vocal track. it probably doesnt have much value because they were cheap back then. keep it if you need it otherewise dump it.

Even a really cheap reverb can have its place. I have always regretted selling my old little Alesis Microverb 4. Nasty little reverb unit but there was 1 gated reverb on it that every once and a while I really miss on snare. Like anytime I want that total phil collins 80's gated verby snare sound (which thankfully isn't that often). Point being, for what I sold it for (cause they aren't worth much at all) I should have kept it.

Get rid of the crap, get something nice that you will use. It does NOT sound good, ever! Not recorded, not live, not never, not nohow!

well mr. bear i owned one for 2 years at least i know what they sound like and can do.yes a cheapo reverb can sound good if used sparingly. its funny back in the late 80-s i went to several studios to work and guess what they had. proudly displayed midiverbs. those midiverbs found use on some big name records i can assure you. i can go on and on. it aint the product all the time. that art has a processor in it many fold power wise to what was in the midiverb.i just love the big studio wanna bee-s that come here and pounce on budget people. now mr. bear go out there and record with your fancy smancy collection of snob gear.

It's quite obvious that some people actually care about sound quality, and others - like yourself - simply don't.........

Just so you know gemsbok, everyone here has a right to their opinion, even if it does differ from your almighty opinion. Also, you are the only one here who punced anyone. The original poster did not come in here touting how awesome his new ART porcessor sounds. Actually, he came in asking if he should get rid of it or not. Thus, Blue Bears comments were 100% on topic. So how about you put the attitude away and open your ears up a bit so you can share and learn at the same time?

I think the point to understand is that these days you can get a great sound with cheap gear, just not that particular cheap gear that he has. So why not give him the good advice to get the cheap gear that actually is useable?

Keep the cheap. You'll get squat for it on e-bay and you'll likely want it someday. Everything can be useful. The shittiest reverb in the world will be the best tool you've got when you want to make a recording of something that sounds like it's going through the shittiest reverb in the world.

As for plugs, try SIR and Convo Boy -- two free convolution reverbs. (Search the board and web for ample info on these) I think they are remarkable considering what they cost, which is NOTHING. I've made a number of recordings I'm very proud of and happily share with anyone that use these little FREE gifts to the world of people who love music.

And, if you do get rid of the ART and then one day wish you had a reverb unit tht could mangle and destroy your sound, for whatever reason, there are a number of rotten free verb plugins that could do the same. Go to

www.kvraudio.com

Figure out how to use the search function and you'll have plenty of great new tools to use--most of which are free.

There's a world of difference between "cheap" and affordable gear...

Here is where we hash that out...
