It needs more cowbell!
Anyone got any experience with this guy yet? It intrigues me because of the S/PDIF outs-I would LOVE to lower the noise floor in my signal chain, and S/PDIF out of the preamp would pull about 10-20 db out of the floor (based on some tests that other users of my front-end have done). I'm currently running about -57 db using a mic, and about -68 db using a DI (other than my junk keyboard, with it's random noise generator...). I'm using a Seasound Solo Ex as a front end, and the PCI card has S/PDIF inputs right on it...

i dont think its s'posed 2 b a preamp.

its an outboard converter?

maybe try a different forum?

:)

Jeap-

There's the ART DI/O converter only, and there's the DI/O preamp, also, known as the the DPS (basically a TPS with a DI/O in the box as well). I want to know about the DPS, not the A/D converter.

As someone who was a vital contributor to the longest (and possibly the most boring) mic preamp threads in mic forum history, aren't you calling the kettle black by telling me to move this to another forum?

:D :D :D :D

Anyhow, my question stands. Anyone used the DPS?

oh.

the tewb preamp SYSTEM with d i/o.

well as far as i know nobody has ever bought one of those but you can buy one and tell us how it is!

:)

I've got an ART DPS DI/O en route via the big brown truck. I will post back here in a week or so when I've received the sucker and have tried it out.

Well, got the ART DPS DI/O Preamp today. I am very pleased with this thing so far. All I have been able to do is hook up the analog outs (I thought I had an extra SPDIF cable lying around - my bad!) and they sound fine.

I mean, this is not an Avalon or even a Focusrite, but it is pretty smooth. Quiet - which is something I am not used to. I can compare it to my Bellari, my audio buddy, and the pre's on my TASCAM digital board - and it kicks ass over those.

The V3 (Variable Valve Voicing) is okay, nothing to sport giant wood over, IMHO. Maybe I will grow to love that feature with time.

I am just glad that I now have a decent, clean, quiet pre now that doesn't sound like a cheapie - at least to my ears. I am looking forward to hooking up the SPDIF out to my digital mixer. I am expecting it to sound a tad better than it does now.

Now, when the KSM 44 arrives, we will see how this pre works with a nicer microphone (the trial period tonight consisted of a RODE NT1 and an Oktava MK319. I usually prefer the Oktava when using my other preamps - with the DPS, the RODE sounded better in my opinion. Like I said, can't wait to plug the KSM 44 into this bad boy.

he likes it!

hey mikey!

:)

this echoes the only other opinion ive seen about art preamps with the doofus dial - that they sound a lot better than the mp predecessors.

i know i shouldnt make fun of the dial since i dont know exactly what it does... i would probably wind up turning it all the way one way or the other and leaving it. i cant imagine myself trying all the different settings each time i use it to find one thats just right.

i admit to being tempted to grab the one without the d i/o.

:)

by the way radio shack has some good digital audio coax cables. i got one and its extremely heavy duty and impressively made out and finished so you can just grab one there. wal mart has cheapie phillips cables that im sure would work but are not nearly as massive or purdy.

:)

Brad-

Thanks for the quickie review. I'd be VERY interested to hear your opinion after using the S/PDIF inputs to your mixer.

Phil

Hi all.
Just wanted to say that we have 4 ART DPS units in our preproduction room. Beautiful sounding preamps. We are using the S/PDIF out as well on each unit w/ no problems. Can't recommend this pre enough! (as far as bang for the buck). This sounds like a much more expensive pre than it is and is ultra-quiet when used w/ the S/PDIF outs.

Good Luck
cheers
