ok heres the deal..

Ive got a shure58, and I connected it up with xlr and an adaptor...
But its working kind of wierd. First of all, its playing straight through the speakers for some reason. But ive got it to record after fiddling around with the settings for volume etc but it still played through the speakers.

I ignored it, put on some headphones, and was recording over an instrumental in multitrack on cool edit. Then it doubled the instrumental... It confused the hell outta me. I couldnt figure out what was wrong... But eventually I found something else out... I tried recording with the intrumental just playing in windows media player, and then recording into cool edit, and it worked, but it was all one track, not multi layered... its like its recording the sounds coming out of my computer as well as whats going in.... and now it wont even record anymore... I thought it was just the mic, but i tried an old headset and it did the same thing?!

anyone know how to fix it?

Change the settings for your sound card.

This is all assuming that you are using windows:

First off, are you using the line or mic input on your soundcard directly. (The 1/8" input)? If so, then try following these directions:

You should see a little speaker in your taskbar on the lower right of your desktop on your computer.

Double click this to enter into your volume control settings. Then click options in the top left and select properties.

Once you are in this, make sure that the device at the top is set to whatever you are using to record into, and then pick the recording button. Also make sure after that at the bottom, you have line-in, microphone, and stereo mix all checked.

After that click OK, and it should open up a new set of volume controls, this time for recording. Whichever box is checked is the one that will be used for recording. I suspect that you had either stereo mix or mono mix checked. So just check microphone or line in, whichever you are using, and it should only record what goes into the microphone.

Yeah, i'm using windows and its directly connected to the mic jack with the 1/8".

I'm at work now, though, so i'll try that when i get home.

OK. That was why it wouldnt record, and i fixed it. I also fixed the recording what was coming out of the computer... I figured it was cos of my stereo... cos i use a stereo instead of comp speakers, so i turned it off and plugged my headphones straight into the soundcard and that fixed the problem.

But now for some reason the quality is worse?
