Real singers are indeed getting harder and harder to find. Screamers are everywhere, nasal chicks with slured speech are plentyfull, bathroom virtuosios and in the car with the stereosingers are crawling out of the woodwork, but real singers, I mean the ones with more than a three note range, or can enunciate well enough to be understood, or know what it means to be on key, or know how to project their voices into a mic, or read music enough to know where they are in a song let alone if they sang the right notes... I haven't found many of them lately either. It's so bad that I'm even having trouble finding back up singers for harmony on a line here and there. I'm a decent guitarist and believe me, I hear it when a singer is off just as much as when I miss a note or chord. I don't like to sound cynical but imo most of our modern "divas" should stick to dancing, nice moves and a pretty face are not requirements for singers. As long as the public keeps buying the garbage, the producers will keep filling the shelves with it. We as the little guys in the recording industry need to be a bit more selective about who we record and maybe the big companies will catch on to the idea. When we start hearing better singers on radio and tv more people will aspire to be better singers, then maybe us little guys wont have quite so much trouble finding the kind of talent that we can take pride in recording. Real talent in the studio would indeed make producing great sounding recordings a reality for most of us. I'm sure there are still plenty of good singers out there, we need to figure out how to get them into our studios.
