almost all the mobo's use VIA!!!

but people say VIA is bad for audio!

ahh!

someone said that only the KT133 was bad for audio. so does that mean that KT266 and KT333 are good to go?

anyone have any experience with these?

i'm looking at the Asus A7V266-E KT266A AA

and Asus A7N266-VM AA

the A7N266-VM AA is a MicroATX, though. Do you have to use a mirco atx case? can you use just a regular mid-tower case?

i'd rather get the A7N266-VM because it's got onboard video and is nvidia chipset.

but that wouldn't matter if the new VIA's aren't crappy, right?

i'm so confused. help.

From everything that I have read, and everything that I have actually experianced, I would say that the newer VIA chips are OK. I think the whole issue of VIA chips being "bad" has reached the level of urban folklore. There WERE problems with the KT133, but that chip is long gone from any new boards.

But by all means solicite other oppinoons, and do research. Tomshardware.com is a good place to start.

I think there is a very real possiblity that some sound card manufacturers are still putting up warnings about VIA not because there is any real problem, but because VIA is in 90% of the motherboards out there - and having a VIA warning makes for a convienient scapegoat if their sound cards don't work right.

thanks.

but yeah, like ALL the mobo's at Newegg.com are VIA.

i found one that uses nforce, but it's microATX board.

it's the Asus A7N266-VM AA i believe.

would that work in a mid-tower case?

I have a VIA KT266 mobo and it works fine with my Aardvark. I think the problems with the VIA chipset are all worked out. Just for reference I have a Biostar M7VIQ.

Now that KT400 is out, I would look for at least a KT333 board.

"VIA chips being "bad" has reached the level of urban folklore"

ah... remember when Creative cards used to be bad because they would explode? (mid 1990's)

Yeh, the original kt133 was troublesome. The Socket7 ones (MPV?) before were even worse. kt133a was better - ok when tweaked. Kt266 had poor performance - corrected with kt266a.
Since then, I think VIA have stopped trying to get out of paying royalties to Intel - the boards aren't as cheap as they used to be compared to Intel chip ones - and are actually sticking to the specs.
Even ACPI works properly on my KT400 and the USB2 ports seem 100% though I don't yet have any music kit plugged into them. The KT333 should be just as good and a bit cheaper.
And we have VIA to thank for forcing DDR memory support for the P4 so that Intel had to join in.

I have the ASUS A7V333... no problems thus far!

well, there was no way in hell i could get a MOTU 1224 to work at all on a KT333 motherboard... but then, that's probably more the MOTU's fault. i'm guessing their newer PCI424 would work fine.
