Are Tama drums any good?

My son is getting into a rock band and i have a chance to pick up a used but in exellent condition set of Tama Grandstar customs(look just like the white set lars from metallica played before the silver set he does now.Dont know anything about drums and was just wondering if Tama was any good?
 
I am not a very experienced drummer but i do belive that TAMA is one of the better brands of drums.
 
Yeah - if it's a good price...

Tama are very good, if it's in your price range and they've been looked after - go for it...

Anything that's good enough for Mike Portnoy and all that...
 
Depending on price and condition, I would go for the Grandstar's. The shells are birch whereas the Rockstars are some sort of basswood composite. In their day, the Grandstar's were also a semi-pro level set. If you get a deal on them, I say go for it...
 
through out my life time...well I'm only 21, but I've had 3 drum sets the first on being a CB2000...first drumset...it was ok...second Perl...much better than the CBthing...but I still didn't like the sound....finally I got a Tama...and I loved it...the sound the easy tuning and I like the way I can adjust everything the way I wanted i....just buy the damn thingit will last a long time
 
I agree with the post regarding birch vs. basswood. Many new low to mid range drums are made of basswood or mahogany. Although maple has been the preferred wood in upper line kits in recent years, birch was a very popular wood at one time, in fact birch has started to make a strong comeback.

I've never owned Grandstars, but if they are indeed birch, if they are in good shape (including bearing edges and lug casings) and if you believe you're getting a good deal - it wood be better than a newer basswood (or as the dealers say "select hardwoods")kit.
 
well...

why buy tama when theres such thing as ludwig?

but to answer the initaial question... if theyre cheap, used and in good condition, get 'em.

i just know there are WAY better drum manufacturers than tama.
