i heard of something new called a SACD(super audio cd) and i don't know anything about it, but it seems pretty cool and i don't know how they work. anybody else heard about them?

Better than CD, or DVD audio? It's sort of controversial, but the general idea is to improve the frequency response & dynamic range of standard 16/44.1 CDs. The SACD does it with a single bit high sample rate using a different principle than CDs; the DVD-A with larger bit depth & sample rate (24/96 surround, or 24/192 stereo).

Here are some detailed, if biased articles (under "Whitepapers"):

I should have mentioned that it's possible for home reccers to author DVD-As, and most DVD players will play them.

Yep dvd-audio and SACD both sound fantastic! I have a pioneer DVD player that also plays DVD-Audio and SACD and i show it off to everyone new that comes over!

yep if you have the software to do it you can bust our your old masters and make DTS 5.1 mixes of it! for full on DVD-Audio you would have to get a compatible player..I actually made a DD 5.1 of a song i did just for fun..it was pretty neat

pure coolness, but the software that i checked out cost over 3,000. is that crazy or not for what i'm asking for?

No, Minnetonka released a $99 package earlier this year that does the basics. I don't have it . . . yet!
