If its the type of music that works with programmed beats and loops (as much pop, and even rock, music these days can), or if it is the kind of music that doesn't need drums at all (like if it is very "folksy"), then, no, drums aren't essential. If it is the kind of music where you really want a drummer, but are trying to get by with a "drummer substitute", then yes, real drums are probably essential. Tracking drums later is maybe not the best solution, but it can work. Better yet, can you just hire a drummer for the sessions (and some pre-production)? Find a good drummer in your area who plays in a band similar to your style and see if he'd want to do a short side-gig for a little bit of cash. I've had good luck with that. If he's into your tunes, you may not even have to pay. He might just do it for the recording credit.

Drum loops sound so good these days. But for a choice between loops and the real thing you have to go the real thing I think. Sure you can find someone to hit the sticks.

If the drummer really knows his shit, and depending on the music of course, it's quite likely the drums would greatly benefit from retracking later AFTER the overdubs, since he'll be listening to the band in its entirety. What drummer in their right mind would prefer it any other way??

Well, we went ahead and gave it a go last night. He played while I worked out a sweet matching beat. We then recorded a few guitar takes (panned one hard left, one hard right) slung in a vocal and I put on a backing vocal.
It's by no means finished but it actually sounds REALLY nice! Starting on the bass line and my el guitar tracks today. Then just want to jet pinickity about the drums and it's virtually in the bag.
Groove Agent can sound pretty good. I get right down to creating imperfections in timing and velocity. I've stuck it in a drum booth (reverb wise - thank you Waves IR-1) and I'm impressed by it (as is my friend!). I think I'll chuck on a hint of Tube from Antares just to bring the fidelity down and we're on to the next track.
... I thought his songs sounded good before. With these little extras this ones brilliant!
I'll keep you updated and post a sample once we're at that stage so any drummers in here can pick me apart!
