is my behringer mx2004a mixer really that bad? what is it that gets it such bad reviews? preamps? EQ? what is so bad about them?

sorry, i don't have anything to compare it to...

I don't know how relative this is, but one studio I am acquainted with put in an MX8000 Eurodesk earlier this year. IT DIED! So did it's replacement and then a third one. The guy was given an MX9000 (remember this is now mixer number 4)..........and it died as well. All had a similar fault apparently.
If this is indicative of Behringers' "professional level" consoles I shudder to think what their cheaper gear is really like.

ChrisO :cool:

well, hopefully mine hasn't died yet!

so anyone know how bad these mixers are? especially the preamps...

I have an MX8000 and still works perfectly...

Mic preamps are far from being like Mackie's, but for a 24/8 is a good machine...

I have a Mackie, and a Behringer, I have not had any problems with the Behringer so far. I use it in my studio, I don't use the preamps on the mixer to record through, but for the price it seems to be fine for someone on a budget.

I've got the Eurorack MX2004a and its the biggest buying mastake I've made so far.

The busess have really bad crosstalk. I was recording on the main buss and I was montioring on the alt buss and the click track blead threw on everything.

The preamps are ok, the eqs suck. The preamps are not quite as clean as the mackies but they are ok. The eqs are just like the mackies, pretty much useless. The eqs on the allen and heath boards are so much better than both the mackies and behringers and thats what I'm use to from work.

Right now I'm taking the signel from the insert into my soundcard and its the only way to get something useable.

Garak, you pretty much cleared everything up. I agree totally.

In a quality control issue like this, you're going to have some products that leave the floor that meet specifications 100%, and some products that leave the floor with flaws. The ratio of flaws to good units is what is important. One good unit does not verify the entire line.

I don't have a Behringer mixer, but what I've been seeing on this board is about 50% of people claiming to have had a flawed Behringer, and 50% claiming no problems whatsoever. That implies some pretty crappy QC in my opinion.

Slackmaster 2000

Its not just quality control. Its how picky you are about how the board sounds. I didn't really notice the blead threw on the busses untill I got a set of studio montiors, the brought it right out. The board is fine for live use and casual recording.

Slack,

its like this...if all your life all youve ever eaten was shit, youd probably say "hey, this doesnt taste bad"....but what do you think happens after you take one bite of a steak?......

for those who arent following :
shit = Behringer mixers
steak = Soundcraft mixers

Behringer does make some decent products like compressors. However, their decent products do not include their mixers.

champagne illusions id say hmmmmm horses for courses
now im sure that three wheel racing car of mine might just win at le mans this year yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn :rolleyes:

but how good are the preamps conpared to say, a mackie?

will these preamps really give a horrible sound compared to other mixers with better pre's?

lucid,

The behringer pre's won't give you a horrible sounds.... but it won't gives you a very pro, clear & distinct sounding sound, can be noisy too at high gain.

It's good enough for making demo, but won't go beyond that.

my 2 cents. :)

Even if one is making demos isnt it better to aspire to clean clear sounds rather then corner cutting only to come back to bbs and scream hey my recordings sound bad why ? well here might be a good place to start save that loose change and get yourself something a little better then what your considering iam sure the end results will be pleasing to the ear :-)

Empires were never built over night slow and steady become consistent and in time you will have the good gear you desire slow down on those quick fix solutions

Man, there is a discusion on why the mixers suck on every forum that might be applicable. And its been discussed many times before. They sound bad. If you don't mind that they sound bad, or are a poor college student and you can't get anything else, then buy it. Shit for a mixer is better than plugging your mics into you're ass.

buy it

but accept it as it is and dont bother asking why it is this way when you actually find out for yourself because as you say its been said all before.

i guess once discovery sets in that would be a good time to then press the search button on bbs and learn what all the noise was about rather then repeating another post on the best shoot out for this or that under a certain dollar value or the best cheap mic to replace the u87 on and on ....................................
