Anyone heard of this band? the have the most awesome drum sound - try anything off of low level owl vol 1 or 2 . Any tips on getting a sound like this?

An amazing drummer, some sizzle cymbals, and stereo delay on the snare. Plus whatever signal chain Ed Rose was using at the time.

Really, though, I would go with a bigger room with some good room mics in addition to close ones. Adding in some room ambience could help a lot in achieving that sound. I would also be pretty minimalist in my mic setup. Try the Glyn Johns setup or something. Really though, just get your hands on the best stuff you can and experiment.

The Appleseed Cast is one of my favorite bands. I saw them live about over a year ago; the drummer is amazing and his drums sound great. I've heard he uses vintage Japanese-made drums, but don't quote me on it. The kick drum doesn't sound close miced in Mare Vitalis or the Low Level Owl albums, but it may be in Two Conversations. The drums in Appleseed Cast albums are very ambient; they're probably recorded in large rooms and my guess is that the engineer used an ambient mic track.

Not sure if Josh Baruth was with them when you saw them (the drummer on Mare Vitalis, LLO, and Two Conversations, he quit the band but I don't know how long ago), but if it was him he was probably playing a vintage Slingerland kit. Check here for some pictures of their gear (drums are at the bottom). My two favorite Appleseed Cast songs in terms of their drum sound would have to be "On Reflection", for the intro and for the rhythm played on the bells of all the cymbals, and "Signal" because I think that song has the best hi-hat sound ever.

I don't know how the new drummer is, but he has some incredibly big shoes to fill. When I saw them I just watched him the whole time pretty much...mind blowing stuff, like watching a finely tuned machine.

I think all of their records have been done at Black Lodge or Red House with Ed Rose, so you may want to check there to get a better idea of the rooms and mics and preamps they have available. That might help some, but I think that most of their drum sound comes from his style. Good luck!
