i'm considering buying a digi 002 console and an apple powermac dp 1.0ghz tower and 17" studio display it comes with some x tra bells and whistles. the pc has an 80 gig hard drive and 1.25 ghz of memory. and i think the 002 has the factory bundle with it. I was just wandering if the g4 is sufficient enough for a protools setup because i can get this set up for considerably cheaper than a new g5 and digi 002 it comes with a nice set of yamaha mrsp5 active monitors for about 3100.00. Again is this sufficient for my home recording needs or should i wait and drop about 7000.00 on a new g5 and stuff. Any feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I would take a look at the Digidesign website (digidesign.com) and click on Product Compatibility. They have a pretty good list of minimum system requirements for the 002, ProTools LE, etc. organized by operating system and computer (Mac/PC). Your post didn't mention if the G4 had OS9 or 10 and what version. You also didn't mention which version of ProTools came with the setup. All these should be compatible and the digidesign web site should answer that question.

If the setup meets the minimum system requirements it may or may not meet your needs for actual performance. This is hard to determine in advance without knowing how many tracks you will use and how many or what type of plugin effects you willbe using. If you have numerous tracks and add memory-intensive 3rd party plugins like Waves, you could really bogdown your system resources. A 1GHz Apple processor is pretty slow by todays standards, although it appears that you are looking at a dual processor model. Also, it's worth noting that alot of people recorded alot of material on these older G4s so they must work for something!

If you have doubts about the oldr G4 and the price of the dual G5 seems exhorbadant, you might consider something in the middle--perhaps one of the i-Mac G5 series. They are fairly cheap by Mac standards and include a monitor.
