...I understand there are those on this board who hate this type of question... please bear with me

I picked up a used dbx DDP for cheap$; seems to work especially nicely as a de-esser. I haven't noticed any ill effects, noise, or poor performance (doesn't mean it's not there! )

There's noticably no digital outs. If there's a knock against this box, would that be it? Or to ask another way -- would someone get rid of a DDP mainly because there's no S/PDIF or AES/EBU out?

I'm thinking it's a pretty good compressor... am I wrong ? Opinions? Is this something you'd put alongside your RNC, for example? Is it a big, long paperweight? A trashbag filler?

I'm not familiar with the box, but you have good ears and if its working for what your purposes are, use the thing! While I believe in good gear, I also believe that thre are great results obtained every day by run of the mill stuff in the hands of experienced people. As for the digital outs, who cares? Everything is gonna go analog to digital anyway except for maybe some synths. I've used some really CHEAP stuff on occasion and its given me just what I was looking for. Just because you have a Neve pre doesn't mean you want to always use it on everything. Variety is the spice.

Thanks, craw. You unduly flatter me. In the end, all that matters are the ears -- and this is probably enough for checking out that box... just thought the much better ears (such as yours) might have some crits.

Other than sales offers, a search turned up only threads where Tom Cram discussed the DDP. I know Tom personally ... strangely enough, I deliver his mail (count him as an acquaintance, since we've really never sat down and chewed the fat).

Seeing as he works for dbx, he's a bit biased to say the least But if he uses it in his studio, I guess it can't be all bad
