Apogee Rosetta 200 problem?

Just hooked up the rosetta via SPDIF through presonus firewire (had to since firewire is only option with my iMac). Play back levels are REALLY hot, and record levels are REALLY weak. Tried to record some acoustic guitar through Studio Projects C3 pair and had to peg the juggernauts with boost on just to get the meters to move in my DAW. Anything simple I should be thinking about? Thanks.
 
I'd run tone through the system and find out where the problem is. That's really all you can do at this point.
 
Make sure the levels are set correctly in the Presonus control panel application for their interface.
 
Thanks for the replies. In response, I can't use the firewire because apogee rosetta doesn't come with firewire, it's a $350 add on card. So I have to go spdif into the firewire unit I have, then into the computer.

I did find out the unit has an auto callibration that sets back to factory reset of -12. I'll try that.

I'll check for the +4/-10, I don't remember seeing anything like that. And yes I did change the levels in the presonus mixer, but I have to peg the levels while recording, and they have to be turned wayyyyyyyyyy down during playback.

The default line level is -12dBFS?!?

What is this, 1992?
 
Although I guess you certainly don't have to worry about overdriving your front end...

But geez... I keep my tracking converters at -20dBFS (because that's as low as I can get them). Then I *still* keep the front end cool.

But I remember when converters were at -12... That was a gain-staging nightmare that I wouldn't want to go through again. So "anti-normal."

But then again, "normal" seems to have taken a back seat to "record really hot without clipping" over the last bunch of years...
 
Yeah, the frustrating thing is when I calibrate this unit, it doesn't have any indicator to tell you what your level is. It's all by ear. The playback I had to turn as low as it would go, and it's still hot.
