Is this a decent preamp? Features aside, how does it compare to the VTB-1 for quality?

dc, I sold my Aphex 107 after buying the VTB-1.
The Aphex was quieter, especially at full gain, than a Mackie VLZ Pro mixer's pre's. I consider the Mackie VLZ Pro pre's to be "entry level" for project studio quality pre's, if that helps as a frame of comparison. The Aphex 107 and the M-Audio DMP3 were comparable when tested with my microphones BTW.

In similar fashion, the VTB-1 is a couple of notches better in sound quality than the Aphex, and are quite capable of commercial release recordings IMHO.

P.S. Keep in mind that the 107 only has XLR ins, and you
may want a pre that also has 1/4" ins.

I'm assuming the 1/4" would be for a line input device like a guitar? And if so, is there an XLR-to-1/4" adapter to get around that limitation? And can the VTB-1 function as a DI box?

The VTB-1 has both 1/4" and XLR inputs.
It also has a button to switch the input to "line level".

I have 2 aphex 107's, im happy with them. I got them cheap and they are clean sounding. But having only a xlr in kinda sux, so i got a direct box.
