I think I'm going to pick up a pair of the Apex 430 large condensers. A friend of mine loves them and can get me a really great price on them for me.(No he isn't a dealer, but is friends with one)

I not going to get a chance to listen before I buy because I live in the middle of no where here in Canada.

I have a C1 as my main vocal mic and I love it but now I need a pair of overheads for drums and general use.

The 430's are cheeper for me than the Marshall electronics MXL603's after you factor in the exchange rate and taxes.

The 430's look alot cooler than the 603's and come with shockmounts. Also with the 430's if I need more vocal mics for doing live shoutcast shows and stuff the 430's should be better than a 58 and actually is cheeper than the 58 :P

I haven't heard much about the 430's besides from my friend who really likes them and he got them after using them in a studio near where he is going to university.

So now the question is should I trust his judgement and hop on this great deal or should I wait and try to find a good deal on a pair of MXL603's?

I have a 430 and it gets used right beside and along with a NT2. I like it, you may or may not...

the 603s sound great on a lot of sound sources, and out of curiosity i even tried them on vocals to reach the conclusion that they could work pretty well on background vocals. you wouldn't even have to eq them so hard to get them out of the way of the main vocal.
you can get on for $50-60 new.
did you consider the behringer ecm8000?

The ecm8000's are out because I want directional mic. I can't get the great prices that they have on sites like zzsounds and musiciansfriend, most of those online dealers can only sell to the US. I can get a pair of the 430's for $369 canadian including 15% tax. If I was to order from the US I would have to pay shipping, $30 broker fees, 15% duty + the canadian doller is only like .60 cents USD.

Plus since the Apex are from the Shanghai factory you could add the Scott Dorsey FET amp mod. Scott sells the pre-amp board and FET for $20.00 US ($8000.00 CND) but you could end up with a much much better sounding mic.

I'm hoping to try the mod later this year on the 430...well as soon the trembling stops in my soldering hand. ;)

Long and McQuade(a pretty well known music store in Canada) is selling them at $140. I brought it yesterday with a Behringer MX802A($150).

This is really my first recording equipment...so I don't know is it good....but it is definitely better than my karoke or computer mic.

clock906.. where abouts in canada are you from. im from around toronto and im too am interested in the 430s. i think im gonna buy a pair of them to use as drum overheads. i've only heard good things about them... especially for the price

Nice to see more Canadians around here. I would also like to know which province. I am from SK. I'll also add that I have an Apex 350 dynamic mic, and I like it for guitar cabs and sometime snare.

Hey foo-bu,
im from around T.O. as well, and i've got a pair of 430's that i use, among other applications, for drum overheads. I've gotten alot of mileage from these mics, and i find that they are especially good for vocals and acoustic guitars. They do the job on drum overheads, although they are not my first choice for that application (although - that's compared to mics worth 2.5 to 3X as much). They have been really useful for the kick drum, and they are a good choice to pick up ambient sounds. FYI: although it's not advertised - there is an internal switch for activating the bass roll-off - you just unscrew the bottom, remove the casing and there it is!

I am from vancouver, BC...

Well...i don't really know ANYTHING about recording...just that I wrote a song, and wanted to record it...so I started to learn more about recording..

I brought the 430 only because it was like the cheapest condesor mic they have and it is on sale. (the expensive ones are several thousands...i never knew that a mic can get that expensive...)

I have an Audio Technica AT813 condenser which works well on acoustic guitar. I am thinking of getting a second mic, the APEX 430 and ART Tube MP pre-amp as a second mic on the guitar. Any opinions on whether a second mic will make that big of a difference when recording an acoustic guitar. Or will the one mic do.
