I just purchased my first the LD condensor mic. Now I know this is probably a dumb question, but I can't figure out what side is the front of the mic. On one side has a triangle and the other side shows the cardoid pattern symbol. If I record with the cardoid pattern facing the guitar the gain is much higher, but the bass freq. are really exaggerated. (The mic is about 12-18in away, so I don't think this is caused by proximity effect).

If I record with the triangle facing the guitar the Freq. response is more even, but the gain is considerably lower.

Which way?

The side with the higher gain...

The apex has loads of low freqs and not even a bass cut... If you place the mic in a way that it gets the low end it WILL be there... So you might try another spot on your guitar...

The Logo faces away from the singer on the Apex mics. If you can read the logo when singing, you got the wrong side. Oh, and it'll sound like ass which should be your first clue anyway.

How the hell did that double post?
I have a 420 and it's WAY too bright for my taste. I don't use it for vocals because of the hyped high end. It's OK on acoustic guitar but I have other mics that do a much better job there.

The 430 has the opposite response. Tons of bass!! I'm trying to record direct from my guitar to capture some high end. Then I just roll all the low end off of the direct and mix in the bassy 430 sound to fill it out. It still doesn't sound like I want it to. I think I better check out a SD. Maybe a MXL603, I know how much everyone likes them around here. Thanks for the help.

I've got a 430 as well, and you really have to play with placement.

You can make it work the way you want, but it's going to take some time.

On my Martin, it's about 24 - 30 inches away (I try not to move...), aimed at the fretboard above the soundhole. You still may have to cut lows a bit so it sits in the mix.

For the price, it's not a bad mic.
