Hello All:
I was just wondering if anyone has had the chance to work with an APEX 420 or two and could give me some feedback on your applications for that mic.
I have access to 2 but I can't seem to find a good use for them (other than stereo room mics). I have tried them on drums, electric guitars / bass, various acoustic instruments and vocals. I was looking forward to using the 420 for vocals but when I got into session mode it just sounded weak. (maybe I was a little off on my mic technique that day, who knows) the 420 was good on the acoustic instruments but it was lacking some "realiisim" to its tone.
Thanx for takin the time
Jeff

make a search for APEX420 on this site... I have seen a few remarks on this mic on this board before...

I myself am using the cheaper APEX110, got it when I was in Toronto last year. :)

I have a couple of 420s that I picked up cheap. The best uses I've gotten out of them are as you say room mics, which was decent, and on acoustic instruments. I've used them for vocals but don't care for them in that application. They're not bad on the outside of a kick drum on the beater. They're a little harsh on drum overheads, IMHO.

I use the 420 for vocals and am happy with the results. The reason I chose it over the Rode and Studio Projects is because of it's lower sensitivity. I know that shouldn't be a great reason, but I found the room noise of the other two unbearable. It's great for someone like myself who can come off sounding nasal on other mics. Just don't roll off the bass, and never try a vocal in omni/fig8 pattern, it'll sound like crap. Oh yeah, and don't use the windsock that comes with it, it's anything but transparent.

Jeff
