Has anyone tried Shure's Beta 87c SDC mic for recording vocals? It is a recently released cardiod version of Shure's popular Beta 87a stage and studio mic. I'm thinking this might be an unearthed gem.
I haven't tried it, but it seems very purpose-built for stage. It has a bass-rolloff to compensate for proximity effect, takes a very wide range of phantom power; it's rather noisy (22dB) for a studio mic. Compared to 14dB self-noise for the KSM27 which is also tailored for vocals, and has a switchable low-cut/rolloff filter. The 27 is quite a bit hotter too, and has a much higher max SPL, pad, and comes with a shockmount. I think I'd spend the extra $50 on the 27.
Bob,
I ran a test with my 87C last night. I tracked my own vocals on a Damien Rice (cover) I've been working on. Recorded the same track three times... with the 87c, then a KSM27, and my old trusty Shure PE86L...which I just like for some reason. Anyway, I am really impressed with the new 87c! To me it sounds more natural than the KSM or PE. The 87c with flat eq was clear with great tone, just fine for me. I'll get a better idea this weekend, recording my friend Marina's tracks. Can't wait! I'll get back/w impressions.
