Hi. I just received my new Studiospares catalogue today and saw this

It looks like a new valve preamp that uses a proper valve circuit and not the gimmick valve thing! It also costs around £75! Looks very interesting and might try this one out!?
I don't trust anything that mounts internal components on the outside... And where did you see that it's a full plate voltage circuit? It looks like more of the same, just a different package...

Two important Rules:
  1. You generally get what you pay for
  2. If it seems too good to be true, then it is
But I'd be interested in more detailed specs before I condemn it entirely

As far as the tubes being mounted on the outside, that was a fairly common design in the tube days. You see a lot of classic 50's-60's tube gear designed that way, as well as some high end contemporary Manley gear.

It makes sense, as far as keeping the tubes and other components cool.

However, due to it's portability, this unit should really have cages around the tubes so they don't get damaged in transport.

That little thing is awfully cool looking.

Hey, it's a freaking channel strip with EQ. I think Sonic Albert should buy one and give it a test run for us. :D

The reason why I thought it was a tube pre is because it has 55dB of gain like the Electro Harmonix 12AY7 and Groove Tubes Brick.

I know it seems extremely cheap for a true full plate tube pre but the Electro Harmonix 12AY7 costs £115 approx.

Studiospares have their own brand of Fortissimo PA speakers which are made in the same factory as a higher priced branded company. Both speakers are made by the same people, have exactly the same components with a slightly different cabinet and the Fortissimo cost under half the price of the branded version!

it's not fully balanced.

it's a tube pedal with an xlr input.

I didn't see any references to the operating tube voltages. If it's like most in this price range, it's running a starved plate which makes it little more than a dim light bulb.
