Just wondering who here is signed under a label...just curious as to how it works.
Did you give them demos or did they seek you out? Do you get payed by CD sales or how does the whole label-deal work?

Mike

We gave them our limited edition album and they signed us on that.
Yeah we get royalties for CD sales.

I know several people signed by indie labels and major labels. Each deal is quite different and dependant on the label and/or what you want out of the label or what the label wants out of you.

For your next album, do they pay for the recording, find you a studio, book you gigs etc? Also, do they push you keep on writing new songs?

Usually, I believe, you get an advance to pay for the recording, and then you or your agent usually books the studio. Some bands use that money to just buy all their own gear. Then if the album is successful, you don't get any money until after the advance is paid off. If you don't recoup enough to cover the advance, I don't think you're usually liable to pay it back.

yeah that's basically true. the artist

Mindset Entertainment here. I usually pay for the studio time, and pretty much everything that is needed for the project, and some of the costs are recouped before the artist starts earning anything. If the album is not successful, there's really nothing I can do except plan for the future. Usually the artist does not 'get' the advance where they can just go out and spend it on whatever.
