hey, i have big problems recording some heavy stuff with the triple x head and cab.

anyone have gotten good results and have some clip of the guitar alone so i could know about where to go.

i only have a sm57 and two spb1,

feels like close micing the sm57 doesn't get the "speaker movement" feel, and the spb1 sounds like a can, boxy, something like that

i know it's about layering multiple tracks, but if it sounds like total crap the first time i feel it's gonna sound total crap multiplied by the nomber of tracks i've tracked.

I think i have a problem with mic placement too, feels like my ear is looking for the loudest and cleanest tone, and maibe i just pass over the sweet spot. because of that "biais".

anyway,
thanks

Snag some headphones and and move the 57 around until you find a sound you like. Remember your proximity effect. Move from speaker to speaker...the most unlikely position might be the best sounding.

Keep in mind, the sound that sounds good to your ears when playing in the room might not be the sound that sounds so good when you're listening to it recorded.

Also, try turning down the gain if you're recording a distorted rhythm.

Do the same trial and error with the room mikes (if you need them)

This was done with a triple X and a 57. There are 2 performances panned hard. If I remember right he was using a Les Paul with EMGs.

well,

the amp is downstair, and i'm in the room upstare listening through monitors while a friend moves the mic downstair. I tried loads of placement and amp eq's, but doesn't feel like THE tone...

i Tried master and channel volume at 10, a 3, one a 10 the other halfway, i just don't seem to get it. gain at 1, at 10, crunch channel, ultra channel, dont know what to to next.

the best i got right now is line out + speaker sim via ozone trash, but still it isn't that good. There is not the speaker movement in the sound.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I'd have to say I've read that cab miking article a few times and its really one of the most helpful articles I've ever read. You just gotta get past the comedy and swearing. Great link metalhead.

I've read it half way already. Got me to learn how to do, but the practice is another thing.

Oh and he stops at the point where the palm mutes no longer does the chugga sound, but don't say how to make it get back

That guy has quite the rage! I like it. He gets his point across quite well I'd say. I especially like the metaphor of signal distortion to herpes.

hey,

i found the problem. The guitar pickup was not suited for the guitar we used, and i used a superlux mic (h7a or something like that)+ se electronics pencil mic, i found 2 sweetspots in less than 35 seconds.
