thanks for any help.

424MKIII

I just got one from Music123.com about a month ago. It came with a Shure mic and cord all for 399.00. I also bought some other recording items from them too and there service was very good. Check other places too, because all of these on line stores will match prices and deals.

Look like this month, July,

www.musiciansfriend.com has the deal. It's a CAD mic and 20' xlr cable included with the 424mkIII, complete, for $399.

That's a very similar deal to the one described above, but Music123.com wasn't running the special anymore.

Here's the deal, July

Guitar Center, 424mkIII, new, clearance, $349, one unit/complete, no accessories, plus tax.

I just got one. I HAD to. That's price/performance, and then some.

I figured I'd be better off picking up a new 424mkIII on clearance now, instead of waiting a year or two, being indecisive, and then later having to go and find used 424mkII, instead.

That's my logic, anyway.

And... if the 424mkIII is on clearance, it begs the question:

Will Tascam follow up with a new cassette 4 track Portastudio, or drop the format altogether?? Wait & see, meanwhile, I've added a new 424mkIII to my collection, and I couldn't be happier.

424mkIII

It would be worth a try to play thses on line stores aginst each other. When I got mine musicians friend had the deal and I was checking music 123 for some other items and mentioned this deal and they did the same so I could get everything from them. i would think that they all are able to do this deal and still make money. I am glad I got the 424mkIII. It's a great uint. Get some good mics and you are set. I use sm57s and a marshall 603s and have had very good results. Fun, fun, fun.

Pit the dealers against each other, like the dogs they are!

Actually, no, I really get GREAT service "and then some" at GC, when I shop there. I can't praise them enough. Service ethic is very high at GC. I practically have a dedicated GC sales rep, for god's sake!

Anyway, pit them against each other for deals, like dogs, because the music gear business is a 'dog-eat-dog' business, like everything else these days!

424 MK III

:p I have one word....... EBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Little Z

Ebay's great.

Deals are abundant. Prices and quality may vary a little, but there are great deals to be had on great used gear. It's a lot harder to judge the exact condition of the equipment, than an in-person look. Shipping is an added cost, but often you can bid on local items, and pick them up. The selection of stuff on Ebay is virtually unlimited, with respect to Tascam and everything else. Tascam's entire legacy can be found floating around on Ebay.

Me, I'm an Ebay/Tascam POWER BUYER, haha.

I've gotten literally DOZENS of pieces of nice gear, all on EBAY, all this year. It's a pretty great system, and like everything else on the web, it gives gear acutions a global visibility. If you follow Ebay, you can get some great deals on low-use equipment. Even older machines that may have problems, only need minor maintenance. Good, high quality pictures on the Ebay auctions really do show the general condition of the gear, overall. Things like head wear are harder to estimate, but I've even seen some clear pics of recording heads, too. On some, I'd say, "Wow, low use, cherry deck!". On viewing other pics of other recording heads, I could say, "Yikes, head wear!". Pictures of the actual recording heads is most common on 1/2" or 1" decks, typically not on cassette decks.

I'll close now, but I agree with the above post, that the 424mkIII, and practically any other Tascam, can be found on Ebay. Overall, I think Ebay is a great place to shop for vintage gear. Deals abound.

As for me, I've bought a LOT of great usd gear on Ebay, but for the 424mkIII, the current top-of-the-line Portastudio, I wanted a NEW deck, and for $350/GC, you just can't beat it. I remember the 244 originally cost ~$1100, in it's day. Price/performance ratios in Tascam Portastudio recording technology has TRIPLED since 1982.

Of all the recording gear I now have, I've only bought 5 pieces as brand new items. The Tascam 244 ['82], 38/M30 ['83], 424mkII ['97], and now, the 424mkIII ['01].

Buying used, vintage, legacy recording equipment is great, no doubt. Price/performance ratio is way up on used vintage gear, also.

Still, it felt really good to pick up a brand new Tascam, for a change. That's great, and the 424mkIII is a great machine. I just couldn't resist. haha. Send me to Tascam Anonymous. Haha.

Ebay's still a great place to shop for recording gear of all sorts.

I'll meet you out there, later.

Ask and ye shall receive....

:D Greetings,
Sometimes no matter how hard you try...you just can't get that square peg into that big round opening. Then there are other times where for what ever reason, let's just call it timing, no matter what you do, you hit the jackpot. Well it just so happens that I came across a Tascam 424 Mk. ll, today. I'm checking it out to make sure everything's proper. So far , it's all good. If it all checks out...it's available...for $225 including S&H and insurance. If this might be to your liking...let me know. Smile....P.R.A.N.K.....practicing random acts of nice kindness.

Greetings from 2001 !!!

$225 seems a little high for a 424mkII or mkIII, unless it's in like-new exceptionally low-use and pristine condition.

I'd say the average price for a 424mkII these days is about $110, and about $150 for a 424mkIII on Ebay,... with off-hours deals going way-way lower!!!

I've personally bought 2 used 424mkIII's off Ebay,... one for appx. $99, and one for appx. $115. I know someone who scored a 424mkIII for appx. $75/shipped.

Look, and you shall find!!! ;)
