So I just purchased the PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System today and it came with a software called studio one. I cant seem to get it figured out. I watched the tutorial video and did everything done in the video but the problem is the program will not play back what I have recorded. I just cant seem to figure out why that is.

Also the other question that I had is that I also purchased the Shure SM57 to use with the PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System but it just sounds terrible. The mic doesn't seem to pick up the sound very well and overall sounds very quiet, but when I turn up the sound on the AudioBox it just causes it to distort. The other thing is that I play with pretty high gain since I play anywhere from light acoustic all the way up to hardcore or metalcore music. Im just hoping someone has an answer for me because I'm pretty dissapointed with these two products and I'm sure its something I am doing wrong because I know that the SM57 is an industry standard.

Any and I mean ANY advice will be considered. I just want to learn how to get decent sound and right now its so frustrating that I want to throw the mic and the interface at the wall.

Thanks a lot in advance. Hopefully someone can help me.

Could it be you have some monitor buttons engaged from when you recorded? DO you have the outputs configured correctly? Can you see that you've recorded something?

Don't give up yet, using a mic and getting a decent sound isn't as easy as it sounds. I'm not the guy to help, I suck at it, but I know there's lots of people around here that'll get you pointed in the right direction.

Not sure what you mean by "play with pretty high gain ". Why? Your recording levels shouldn't have anything to do with the type of music you're playing. Proper levels are proper levels.

So, when you say the 57 doesn't give you enough volume, what volume are you going for? You shouldn't try to get anywhere NEAR 0db. You should be peaking at no higher than -6db (and I'm being very generous here), and you should be averaging way below that, like -18db (again, being generous).

So what I mean about playing with high gain is that I play with a Boss GT-10 and I turn the distortion/overdrive all the way up. The other thing is on the audio box I have it set to 0db. The problem with this is that I get almost no sound what so ever. And this is through recording with audacity because I still can't seem to get playback from studio one.

The other problem is I have to resort to raising the audio box up to about +16db which ultimately makes the recording sound terribly distorted and bad. I'm wondering if there is a way around this? Do I need to crank up the power on my amp? Increase the volume of the recording through the computer(which still won't give me the sound quality that I am looking for)?

Once again I am a complete newbie when it comes to recording. I have almost no clue what I am doing and what I can do to get better sound quality.

Also TetraFish, I have set up the output correctly, I can see the sound waves from what I have recorded and as far as I can tell I don't have any buttons turned on that don't need to be, but I can look again. Did you have any other suggestions? The tutorial for this program is worthless.

Not sure what the issue is but I would try connecting the pedal and record direct. Your GT-10 will basically work as an interface. This way you skip a D/A conversion and a A/D conversion. Guaranteed it will sound better.
