Is this tubepre any good why is it soo cheap? Does it have a real tube? I am trying to get add worth to my vocals they sound really dry with my solid state Groove Tube GT55. I figure it would be the pre and a tube would add warmth?? correct me if im wrong thanks.

Got it for free with my Firepod. Bluntly put, you get what you pay for.

Do a search a lot of posts on it.
I have 2 of them that dont get much use.
I wish I got a DMP-3 or a Studio Projecst VTB-1

The tube knob is really just a distortion knob. Without the tube section its a decently sterile pre but it's not nearly as good as other pres in the price range, vtb-1 and dmp3 included.

The TubePre is actually a very clean preamp, even with the tube dialed up. So it's probably not what you are looking for.

You would do a lot better if you budgeted more like $300 or so for your preamp. Maybe the ART Tube Channel, for example.

IMO it's clean UNTIL you dial in that tube crap, that's when the distortion always kicked in for me. Just too blah sounding for me.

Blah sounding, generally yes. I found with the TubePre's that I had for a while that I could dial in a fair amount of gain quite cleanly and then at maybe the last 25% of gain I would get into the distortion thing.

My trick with that unit was to dial in approximately equal amount of gain between the gain and tube gain knobs. It actually sounded pretty decent that way. Using all solid state or all tube gain sounded less good in my experience.

Hey my first post here,
I have one and it doesn't seem to do much, even with the drive cranked wide open. I recorded a vocal with it then recorded with just my recorder pre's(roland vs-2000) and couldn't tell much difference. Steve
