I just got one and I was having some difficulties in Vegas 5. I switched software and it seems to work fine. So now I am on a laptop with 8 channels of 24/96 and it's blowing my mind.

But the purpose of this thread is not to brag, here's the deal: I have 14 days (10 now) to return this thing and I don't want to get stuck with a dud. So let's air it all out and be completely honest here. Is there anything you don't like about your 896HD yet? Have people beeen having problems with this unit? I checked some forum chatter out but it's hard to judge how reliable the thing is when you are just searching for problems with it.

Let's get a list going of users and complaints if any. I would like to know how long you've had yours, how you use it (number of channels simultaneous recording, sample rate using ect..) and also, I would love to hear from anyone using input modules from other manuyfactureres like the Behringer ADA 8000. It seems like a dream to be able to plug a $230 unit into this thing to get another 8 input channels with preamps. Is it a dream?

I will start, I can't seem to get 192khz recoprding to work with my laptop and I don't like the way the headphones won't work in that mode. Seems cheap but I guess I really can't hear the difference between 48khz and 96 khz anyhow so what do I care?

While I don't have the 896HD, I do use an 828mkII (roughly 2 years now) and am very pleased with it.
I've only toyed around with 96kHz, whereas all my real projects are done at 48kHz and sound perfectly fine to my old ears.
Many times, you will find that people only post in forums with problems they have and not praise for a unit. More often than not, it ends up being an incompatibility issue or just plain operator error as opposed to a genuine unit problem. That's not to say that faulty units don't exist. Placing the blame on the unit itself can be questionable at times.

ADAT Lighpipe is a dream come true. I've not used the ADA 8000 but have heard the results of one (three actually into a RME digiface) use for live tracking ... and they sounded quite good. Personally, I use an M-Audio Octane. Although I like the Octane, I'm thinking about giving the Mackie Onyx 800R a try.
In short, I'd say you made a good choice with the MOTU and the ability to add 8 more channels via Lightpipe is very much real. You can do 96kHz over ADAT Lightpipe but you are limited to 4 channels per ADAT optical input as opposed to 8 at 48kHz.

Yeah, I read that the limit of the Behringer was 24/48. that's fine, I wouldn't go much higher than that anyhow.
