Anyone have experience with a real Ela M 250-251?

I've built a clone, as (I think) most of you know. I originally made it with a 797 capsule and it sounded fantastic. A tiny bit sibilant, but really 3D sounding and present. Recently I decided to upgrade the capsule to a Peluso CEK-12 and was thinking it would be in the ballpark of the Ela M sound. Now I don't know.

I tried the mic on a country singer tonight I have recorded before using a Royer Mod V67G. Those tracks came out thick and it had presence and cut right trough the track. It was a bit boxy, but it worked.

We tried redoing the tracks again tonight and used (and ruled out) several other mics (ribbon, Oktava 2500) and went with the Ela M clone. This is the first time I used it after the capsule swap. The mic is, in a word, creamy. The top end is silky and the bottom is smooooooooth. But it has no cut or presence. It that other people's experience as well? Is that the traditional tone of that mic or am I off the mark? If that's the case I'll go back to the 797 capsule, because it was more versatile.

What do you think?

Phil,

Where did you source the info, etc., for your clone?

Cheers

Built it based on the Telefunken schematic. Easily found on the web. I also referenced as many pictures as I could find.
