I just did the ultimate no-no and ordered a pair, sight unseen. I figured, what the hell, even if they're just fair, they'll be worth the $300.

I've got access to some nice mics, but they're all large diaphragm; I wanted a pair of smallies to work with too. I have a pair of Neumann TLM103's (one's mine, one's a buddy's) a Shure KSM 44, a Shure KSM 32 (a buddy's again) and a Rode NTK (it's good to have friends.)

I also have the usual boatload of '57's, D112, '58's and so on. I was planning on trying them as drum overheads and perhaps some acoustic guitar-hell, maybe even micing an amp.

I know the Octava MC-012's and MXL 603's have their supporters, but it seems for everyone who's really happy with them, someone else is really unhappy-and it seems to be largely quality control problems. Everybody seems to be fairly happy with their Rodes, other than some NT1 problems.

Now, before anyone says it, yes, I know, the KM184's are almost certainly better mics, and the 451's are real good, and for some things, the SM81's are too-but they're all signifigantly more expensive.

So, anybody got a pair of these?

What are you using them on? What have they worked best on?

I've had my Rode NT5's for some time now, so I've used them as live stereo room mic's to overheads. The NT5's are good general purpose small condenser mic's and the NT5's sound different than my SM81's, MXL603's, MC-012, and etc --- and that's why I like them.

Thanks.

Their first job audition will be for drum overheads, sounds like they're decent for that. We shall see...

I've used my new pair on acoustic guitar (so far a Taylor and a Lowden) and must say I really like them. I ended up using a pretty close mid+side on both guitars, after quite a bit of experimenting. The Lowden was nice with a simple stereo setup as well, (it's a very small, crazily resonant cedar+rosewood guitar). The Taylor really benefitted from the side/rear mic to bring out the harmonics/resonance - that seemed to be nearly drowned out by big-body boom in the front mic.

I have a pair of B3's on the way, looking forward to experimenting with those, but not sure my room will allow it. The small, "pinpoint" NT5s work great for my crappy basement.
