For the record, I've never used cracked or software of a dubious origin. My view is that small software manufacturers, especially, deserve all the meagre profits they can accrue before idiot, juvenile crackers deprive them of their livlihood.
But I do think it's a bit of a blow if one goes bust, leaving folks who've followed them, admired and used their work, to go whistle. I know it may be the activity of crackers and such that could have caused their demise but they should make some arrangements for their product to live on, albeit under another company's care/banner if they wish to see it protected. Who owns the copyright in a product of a terminated company I wonder, if no one buys that copyright from the liquidator?
I don't know what's happened to the LiveSynth folks, but whatever it was it's left their users stranded.
I've personally switched to VSampler3 (bundled now with Sonar3) but they'll be releasing their stand-alone version shortly. Well worth checking out.
