Hi all,
have been driving myself nuts for the last few weeks trying to get info and reveiws on used , good quality drum machines.
As i am only new to home recording, and am still at the " learning from my mistakes " stage, i am still reliant on the rest of you guys for most of my advice. basically, after getting pissed off with the drum patterns on my yamaha dgx keyboard, i decided it was time to get a drum machine. jeezzz, there are so many of them out there.
i have ended up with a mint condition " novation drumstation ", as all the reveiws i have read all seemed to heap quite a lot of praise on this machine, and i managed to get a reasonably priced one off ebay. Then i had a second , sickening thought """""""" is this drumstation aimed at the techno, hip hop market, or is it a decent all rounder. Most of the reveiws were from techno type mags and forums. I play a lot of blues, and rock ballads as well as acoustic stuff. Have i got the right sort of machine ???
IS there anything better out there for the £130 i paid for this novation (used of course) What would your reveiw of the novation be ???
would really appreciate some info.
Need to get the manual from somewhere as well. novations download pdf site doesnt download the manual,,, failed 3 times.

Hello.

I've had Novation Drumstation V2 for couple years, so i thought I could reply to this thread (and btw, this is my first post on any forum ever). :p

Drumstation is an emulation of the old roland rhythm machines from 80's (TR-808 & TR-909).

here is a link to the 909 & 808 samples (which the dst emulates quite well), i hope this gives you some kind of picture of what kind of sounds the drumstation does:

As you can hear its far away from any acoustic stuff.

Both machines are pretty much the standard in electronic music.. especially the 909 kick, but im quite sure you dont want to be using it on your blues or rock ballads..

I hope this helps you out. :)

I think you may be a little off with this box (although a rock ballad with a pumping 909 kick and hats might work :D ) Look at a Alesis SR-16 or Boss box, those tend to have more realistic sounding drums. The drumstation is aimed for dance sounds 100%

Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice. I have got the drumstation up and running now and control it with an evolution 361c controller which is great.
I have found that my initial disapointment has reversed.
By combining patterns from the novation , with some drum patterns from the yamaha dgx , has brought about some quite suprising and original results.
I am still playing around with using both machines, but its funny how something so techno orientated can be combined with more traditional music themes.
Isnt that what we would all like to acheive ???? individual and original sounds ?? Its all about trial and error, mixing and missmatching sounds does bring about some suprising results.
Will keep it for the time being whilst i am having fun !!!
Cheers all,,,, kev.
Now i am back off to cubase forum. Been living on there since i got my cubase system 4 last week. JEEEZZZ,, ANOTHER 16 HR SHIFT COMING UP.

Why not download "Leaf Drums". It's free. it comes with some basic sounds and you can use any wav. files with it. You could even make wav. recordings of your novation.

With all the drum machine programs available on the net (some free, others cheap), I'm not sure what a physical drum machine really has to offer above these (except cost).
