Anybody want a AGP 4x Radeon VE Dual Head Video Card?

Well, you will be able to find it out in front of my house, near the garbage, covered in my very own fecal matter.

When I pull this thing out, I swear I am gonna crap on it.

Ahem, excuse the hostility.

Can anybody recommend a dual head video card that will play nice in the sandbox with Windows XP?

If I had my druthers, the card would be 4x AGP with at least 32mb (I will consider 64 if the price isn't too bad, I am not a gamer, but I might do some 3d graphic stuff from time to time - I don't know if this matters, but I thought I'd mention it) and it would have support two CRT monitors. If it has one LCD head, and one CRT head, that is fine - I have an adapter that I will try to remember not to crap on.

I've heard good things about Matrox Nvidia G- ... something something. Anybody using said card with Windows XP and all is good? I have seen differing names (where the 'something something' is - I don't know the differences).

My system:

Asus A7S333 momma board with SiS 745 chipset
Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53Ghz
512mb PC2700 DDR ram
Delta TDIF

Oh yeah, one more thing - the Radeon seems to be causing my system to crash all the time. This is per the log in Windows XP. The other problem is this - when running in dual screen and a program is performing even a pretty easy task, the secondary monitor gets kind of fuzzy and jumpy. I would like to lose this problem as well.

Are there any other cards out there that people are having luck with?

Thanks,
Brad

Damnit I hate ATI cards.

All Geforce4 cards have dual monitor support built into the chipset. You just have to find one that is reasonably priced and has connectors for multiple monitors. Decent manufacturers would be Gainward, Leadtek, Visiontek, PNY, MSI, Abit, Asus, etc.

You'll be fine on XP with any Geforce4 using nVidia reference drivers.

Thanks Slackmeister!

I take it that you aren't interested in my soon-to-be-decorated ATI card then?

By the way, shame on me! Shame on me very freaking much!

Emeric warned me about making sure all of my components were compliant with WinXP. I did, too. Except for this damned video card. I took the salesman's word for it. Not just any salesman either - I went to junior high & high school with this guy. Why would this guy steer me wrong? Granted, he looks like an Elvis impersonator now, but he still seemed cool. He told me everything would be fine with that card and WinXP. I mean, we weren't best friends or anything. Heck, I even dorked his little sister when we were in high school...

Oh, um, wait a minute...

Wait a damned minute - you don't think? Naw, couldn't be.

Heck, mail it to me... -I don't run WinXP, and won't until I have to..... -if I ever have to......

Just remember though: "Windows XP is the most advanced Microsoft OS ever, that's the most stablest, niftiest, and has the most advanced digital-rights-management software backdoored right in!"

I use a Matrox G450 Dual Head card with WinXP Pro. Stable and affordable. Although Sound Forge 5.0 has a problem in which buttons from programs I have running underneath it sometimes show through on it, but that's just cosmetic and not really a big deal.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

For the record, my ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder is running fine under XP. And my actual recording system also has a Radeon card running under Win 98. However I only run single monitors on each.

Thanks guys.

I was so fed up with this problem, I went out and plunked down $130 for a XTASY nVidia geForce4 MX 440 64mb DDR with dual VGA heads.

Popped that bad boy in and have been pretty happy. I still have occasional problems because when I uninstalled the ATI stuff, it didn't really work - I did what the ATI literature said to do - but it didn't seem to work. My System 32 file still has a bunch of ATI related stuff in there - one thing is called ATI Smart (ati2sgag.exe) and that is the little scumwad that is causing my grief - although now it is only intermittent. Can I just delete the ATI stuff from the System 32 file and be okay?

Also, now I get a funky error message when closing certain applications - Fruity Loops is one of them - every time I close it now, I get an error message (please see attachment).
Any ideas?

Otherwise, I am happy as a clam - the stability I have yearned for is now within reach. I can taste it.

Brad,
Was that a REAL ATI card or a "Powered by ATI" card?

I have a dual head ATI VE that is actually some sort of OEM knockoff thingy.... Works fine in XP.

I had to use what ATI called "Reference Drivers", but it works like a champ.

did you go to ati's website and look for xp drivers? It may not have shipped with the right drivers.

Matrox is known for dual head support. May want to use them. Or the ATI radeon 8500 128mb card. I know it works under XP, and pretty well.

I'll trade you my Matrox G450............................................. for a Les Paul or something of equal value... :D

Seriously though, the G450 kicks ass and you can find them for cheap.. especially now that the new generation of Matrox cards is out.. although I haven't heard much good about the new Matrox cards.. Pariah or something like that..

I'm a 3D graphics professional who does audio on the side and you pretty much can't go wrong with nVidia
