I was just watching a videotape of the delta blues era and it left me in awe.I appreciated their music. It was this particular guy named "Son-House" that played the guitar with compelling comviction.Though,I'm into hip-hop.I think I'm gonna sample some of his work.....

My question is: Do you guys like or appreciate the delta blues...I'm talkin waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the day....If so,elaborate a bit:)

Yep. Check out Big Bill Broonzy in the cutout bins. He'll knock your socks off.

Son House was a strange combanation of preacher and blues man. At one time, he'd had stoped playing and took a straight job. Someone found him and recorded him in the 60s. The reason this was so cool was because he still played the same way he did in the 30s while all the others from that era had changed with the times. Son House was still pure.

King Of The Delta Blues Singers

Robert Johnson (sp?)

A friend of mine back in the UK introduced me to Robert Johnson recordings.

I didn't appreciate it at the time (impetuous youth and all that), but he's well worth checking out.

My son's girlfriend's father keeps the Delta Blues alive here in Perth, Western Australia.

You just amazed me.Everything you just said is 100% accurate 64Firebird.I watcehd him as he played his guitar and you can see it all in his face. All the pain and struggles of his time...It was said that Robert Johnson was the protege of Son House.Ahhhhhhhh, they way he played slide guitar was rejuvenating...

My fave has always been Brownie McGhee.

Not always as raw as Son House, but the roots are there.

Sampling????
Is that like theft??
hmmmmm.......

By the way...I enjoy anything from Charley Patton....

He doesn't care. Doesn't even know the meaning of copyright.

Just to be safe let me offer a preemptive "shut up"...

I really like some old blues stuff, and Johnson stays my favorite.

Son House and Robert Johnson are legends and well known. There were some other fantastic delta blues musicians that are lesser known like Sam Chattam (the best delta blues guitarist of all in my opinion) and Son Thomas. I was privaleged to have been raised in mississippi and when i was a teenager (in the 70's) I got a chance to hear alot of those old delta blues cats playing out on the street....just jamming. A friend of mine took Son Thomas under his wing (for free) and bought him a decent acoustic, a small P.A., tuned his guitar (Son Thomas couldn't tune a guitar) and booked him some gigs in some of the nicer blues clubs. that led to him going to Europe and selling alot of records.

Almost all of that generation of delta blues men are dead now and that style is a lost art. Its a shame, because its one of the purest forms of american music and the father of rock and roll.

I think my favs of the guys from that era are Lonnie Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Although Blind Lemon is not really a Delta player, he came from Texas.

About sampling those guys, I don't think you don't have to worry about it, most those songs were never copyrighted and even if they were a copyright is only good for the life of the writer plus 50 years. Those songs are now part of our culture and free to use.

Sampling Blues Legends

DJ-Fingaz,

If you must sample these Delta Blues legends, please do it with respect. These guys had a hard enough time when they were alive. Treat the recordings with reverence and please, give full credit. Lord knows they've earned it.

Spread the word DJ, spread the word :)
