Anyhow, lets start at the beginning. You need CLEAN guitar going in, you should leave plenty of headroom there is no reason to clip. It should look nice and spiky and sound like shit on it's own (here is my example, I use an active guitar as well):
One thing to note with active guitars, if the battery is dieing it will sound distorted no matter how you set the gain on your interface. If your guitar doesn't sound clean like this and sounds fuzzy no matter what you try, replace the battery!
Ok lets get some amp sim going, you said you use LE456 so lets just roll with that:
NOW this is where I can't TOTALLY show you how to use what you have since I'm on mac and Kefir won't work for me, but don't worry the prinicpal is the same.
First off I used the sm57 impulse off my "free stuff" link on my website, you can find that in my sigtature.
Second, TS-999 (VST) can be found here for free:
Audio Plug-Ins
3rd, the eq I use isn't free but I illustrate how you would do what I am doing with it with the free one in my DAW (cubase)
Screen shots of my exact settings:
I'm running THIS FIRST:
Then this:
Then this (this is the cabinet/impulse loader, note there is no eq, no stretch or messing with the decay or anything like that, and the DRY signal is turned off if you can't "turn off" the dry signal all you do is set the wet dry knob in your plug to 100% wet!)
Then I'm rolling off the low end, because it sucks and ended up really whooly in my case. Guitar is a mid range instrument not a bass instrument. Those frequencies are useless especially when you add a bass guitar:
Now obviously you don't have SIR 2 or the nomad factory eq, but it doesn't matter. Just set your impulse loader like I said and use your daw's eq like so to do the same thing the eq I'm using is doing (the eq would look like this):
Now, that's what you do with the guitars but to get it rippin you need to double that take. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THIS SOUNDS LIKE SHIT. No no, play it again and pan both so they sound in stereo like so, you do not have to change settings if you don't want to (I didn't):
Now drop some bass on those bitches and some drums and viola, instant brootz. You should probably spend more time than I did on this clip as you can hear some of my playing is sloppy. The tighter you are the better it sounds trust me, this is just what you get when you throw something together in 10 mins.
