So I have been getting into the whole sim amp tones, trying to come up with some sort of decent tone. I am into extreme metal, and I don't have my half stack around to record so I am looking at my alternatives. I have about all the free vst amp sims and a ton of impulses. Has anyone been able to get a decent recording with these sims? If so, could you give me some help. I want a tone similar to The Black Dahlia Murder, Wretched, Veil of Maya, The Acacia Strain, something heavy. I am getting pretty frustrated, can anyone give me some help.

lol, what sims and what impulses? Do you know what the impulses do or even what to do with them?

WHAT SIMS.

You need to come back first and throw down A LOT more information. Your signal chain (what guitar, where you are plugging in said guitar, what recording interface, what recording program, what sims, what impulse loader if any etc...)

can anyone give me some help.

I'm sure I can give you some pointers on how to get there, but we need to cover the basics first. This includes how to ask for help properly on a forum. :)

I agree :o I tried to decipher this earlier and build a reply but i got stuck

Sorry guys, wasn't thinking. I wanna use the Poulin LE456, but I have about all the free ones out there. I have lecab and kefir, I like kefir the most because it is simple to use. I have a peavey 23 III series with emg 81/85's in drop c. I run my guitar into a Tascam us800 interface, into the poulin le456 to kefir, and I normally use the catharsis spre-8 inpulse or an orange 2x12 cab impulse. I think I have some issues with my gain though. I never thought about it, but I am clipping badly even with the gain all the way down with my us800, I read somewhere else that you have to have a pretty clean signal to get good results. But I still want all the help I can get. I use sonar 8 as my daw as well, if that is really that important.

Actually, I have a new tone that is perfect, there is this christian band called Becoming the Archetype that has the most amazing guitar tone. If you guys could help me figure that out, I would be pretty stoked.

Some pointers with Kefir:

Mix ALWAYS to 100% when running impulses. Don't mess with the gain, and don't mess with the length. Seems like a pretty straight forward plugin.

You also have a convolution plugin inside Sonar called (or at least you should, might only be the producer version) perfect space that will load impulse files. However this has a chance of sounding better than Kefir.

Anyhow, the next post will be more informative throwing together your tutorial now.

Anyhow, lets start at the beginning. You need CLEAN guitar going in, you should leave plenty of headroom there is no reason to clip. It should look nice and spiky and sound like shit on it's own (here is my example, I use an active guitar as well):

One thing to note with active guitars, if the battery is dieing it will sound distorted no matter how you set the gain on your interface. If your guitar doesn't sound clean like this and sounds fuzzy no matter what you try, replace the battery!

Ok lets get some amp sim going, you said you use LE456 so lets just roll with that:

NOW this is where I can't TOTALLY show you how to use what you have since I'm on mac and Kefir won't work for me, but don't worry the prinicpal is the same.

First off I used the sm57 impulse off my "free stuff" link on my website, you can find that in my sigtature.
Second, TS-999 (VST) can be found here for free: Audio Plug-Ins
3rd, the eq I use isn't free but I illustrate how you would do what I am doing with it with the free one in my DAW (cubase)

Screen shots of my exact settings:

I'm running THIS FIRST:

Then this:

Then this (this is the cabinet/impulse loader, note there is no eq, no stretch or messing with the decay or anything like that, and the DRY signal is turned off if you can't "turn off" the dry signal all you do is set the wet dry knob in your plug to 100% wet!)

Then I'm rolling off the low end, because it sucks and ended up really whooly in my case. Guitar is a mid range instrument not a bass instrument. Those frequencies are useless especially when you add a bass guitar:

Now obviously you don't have SIR 2 or the nomad factory eq, but it doesn't matter. Just set your impulse loader like I said and use your daw's eq like so to do the same thing the eq I'm using is doing (the eq would look like this):

Now, that's what you do with the guitars but to get it rippin you need to double that take. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THIS SOUNDS LIKE SHIT. No no, play it again and pan both so they sound in stereo like so, you do not have to change settings if you don't want to (I didn't):

Now drop some bass on those bitches and some drums and viola, instant brootz. You should probably spend more time than I did on this clip as you can hear some of my playing is sloppy. The tighter you are the better it sounds trust me, this is just what you get when you throw something together in 10 mins.

I'm looking forward to that man! I have a band in studio now that has crappy amps and pedal boards that they demanded to use. I took a direct line on each just in case. I'm gonna need em.

Wow, Guitargod, I don't think you could have gotten more specific, thanks. I am gonna give it another shot, I think my battery could very well be a culprit so I will replace that before experimenting.

Ok, so I attempted to get my "tone" again tonight. No luck, I changed out my battery, but that didn't matter apparently. I turned down the volume on my guitar so my signal would only go up to about -12db. Well, I put in le456, and lecab with an ENGL ir. Well, I still have this aweful tone. I noticed that even though I have the guitars recorded under clipping that they do clip once I add the plugs. Well, I adjusted the volumes on the le456 to bring down the gain, and it still didn't make a difference. I am totally stumped, does anyone have any suggestions. I haven't gotten a clue what I am doing wrong. The search for the ultimate tone continues. Once again, I want a Becoming the Archetype/Protest the Hero/The Human Abstract kind of tone, if anyone can figure out my dilemma, that would be awesome.

got nothing for you sorry..I dont even know the bands mentioned

also Im not really a guitarist even though I own more than a few, so great tone passes me buy lol

in fact I dont even know what Im doing in this thread :D

but I use Amplitube 3, my friend owns a few tube amps and some nice hi-end guits and when he visits and we have a wee jam hes always amazed how good a sound we get out of this sim....I have GR, a Vox Valvetoric, a V amp pro, and Line 6 Spider/pod farm/pod 2...but Amplitube is by far the best

I have loads of impulses Ive collected and used host sims but they are so old they dont come close imho

heres a free version with 4 amps....dunno if you can use it but its worth a shot, you can buy custom amps separately for it so maybe just see if its useable

To amend my tutorial...

You DO want to turn the gain down on the cab sim plug if it's clipping. But some of those IR loaders don't come with meters.

Big fan of Guitar Rig here. Since I discovered it I haven't used anything else.

I am after a tone similar to Becoming the Archetype, you can find them on youtube, and listen to the magnetic sky. that is the perfect example of what I want my guitar tracks to sound like. Do you think guitar rig is capable of that sound?

I think trying to emulate someone else's sound will end up with you being incredibly frustrated.

Absolutely.

I think that's a lot of the reason amp sims get a bad rep. They are capable of their own amazing tones, but those tones more than likely will not sound like your uncles '57 doucheverbomatic or whatever it's trying to emulate.

I listened to a little of that tone, and it sounds like a standard metal tone that I'm more than sure guitar rig can emulate.

As long as your remember to overdub of course.

I am looking into guitar rig, I actually have a sample of it with sonar. I just never use it, do you guys think that I should use impulse cabs though, I do have like mesa and engl impulses? I haven't really messed with it alot.

Wow, I am kind of feeling alittle stupid right now. So I figured out the problem, I am using lecab v1, well, I never realized that my power was off on the impulse loader till about five minutes ago lol. Wow, did that make a difference. So, I am still wanting advice, on my tones though. I know you guys don't think emulating someones tone is gonna work, but I still want to try to get close. I want the note clarity that band Becoming the Archetype has, we play some pretty technical riffs, thats why I say that, lots of sweeps and taps. I want to know what sim that you guys suggest for that kind of sound, like I said before I have alot of them. I figured that probably going with the le456 with an engl impulse would probably get my desired sound. I think that is what amp they use anyway.
