i have problem with melodies most of the times as i get stuck on one... so if i make a chorus, its hard for me to make a verse that matches the chorus but different enough to make it build up to the chorus... same goes for prechoruses, bridges and intros...

any pointers people here care to share?

Caffeine.

:D

But seriously.... Try writing the chorus in a diffeent key, then transposing it back to match the verse. You'll naturally come up with a different melodic style in a different key (at least I know I do as a pianist), but since you'll be thinking about the rest of the song, it should be somewhat cohesive.

A pretty simple idea is to reverse the chord order, like if the chords on the verse go C>Am>G on the chorus change it to Am>C>G, this is very subtle as there is really no key change or other major change. A key change works well almost always, if the verse is in E do the chorus in A. Modulating after a verse or chorus also has a dramatic effect. Tempo changes have a major impact but are hard to work with and even harder to perform live.

Choruses are generally sung in a higher register than the verses. Not always...but often.
