Let us be unburdened by that which has been ?
I have a CD-RW700 from years ago, low hours, that is having trouble cycling through the startup commands, making it unable to use. Does anyone else own a CD-RW stand alone burner that has had these problems? The A/D converters on it are fantastic, but repair costs are probably higher than the value of it.

I really want a Masterlink unit if I have to replace it, but the CD-RW700 has great A/D converters, which is what makes it usable. Maybe I should just send it back to TEAC and pay the $200-300 for repair + shipping, idk.:(

I have the same one.Really nice unit.It hasn't given me any trouble yet.Do you have the manual? Sometimes the trouble shooting
section helps???

Hi, I have just joined and in spite of being a newbie I may be able to help.

I recently picked up one of these recorders and it was stuck at the welcome screen with the drawer refusing to open. After a bit of research I found mention of a problem with a capacitor leaking and when I had a look inside the capacitor in question had leaked right enough. I took it to my local repair guy who swapped it out with a new one for £30 and I now have a perfectly operating machine. I am loving this machine already.

I had one and it stuck at the welcome screen also.
I hadn't heard of the cap problem but it's too late since I finally threw it away.

Replace the 10.000 uF capacitor and you'll be good. I replaced it in my CD-RW700 a month ago when I had the same problem.

Best regards

I had read about that cap on answer.com or something when searching google. Wasn't sure if it was bs, but if it worked for you guys I'll take the cover off and see if I can find it. Incidentally, I bought the masterlink, but my TASCAM is in mint condition...except that it doesn't work at the moment...so I may keep it in my stereo setup when it's fixed.

I've had a whole bunch of these over the years it's as stated the 10.000 uF capacitor that need replacing costs pennies its located behing the display screen if memory serves me right, these are really great mastering units even after all these years.

Yep. Opened it up and saw the 10K cap leaking and the top swollen. I suck at soldering so I'll take it to my amp tech who should do it for cheap. Here's a photo of the cap in case anyone else ever searches this thread, right behind the display where Klinux said it was.

crap ...... I looked and asked about that when mine went out and this cap thing never came up ..... poopy.

Now it's in the landfill.

:(

Don't feel bad; TEAC repair center (Jim Finch) didn't even seem to know about it. He said it sounded like a bad power transformer. Answer.com is the only other place I'd even heard about the bad cap. As you can see in the pic, the top of that cap is domed pretty bad. Not to mention the brown shit leaking out da bottom.

It is good those that found out the cap problem are willing to share.
I can work on those but in my experience it is best worked on by an experienced Technician so while I
was Chief Engineer of radio stations in Chicago, I just sent my Tsacam and Sony CDRW units to New jersey
Factory Service where he has made great results for all the units I sent him and he is reasonable cost wise.
The 10,000uFd cap puffed like that reminds me of those I see in computer boards- maybe they are sourced the same. Many times repairs are nothing more than that so be confident.

Sam,

Just talked to my amp tech. He's going to replace it for free (minus the cost of the cap) and will be going to the electronics store Thursday. FYI, he asked me the size and voltage values over the phone so he knew what to pick up, so if anyone runs into this same problem and needs the info they are 16V, 35mm high by 15mm diameter.

Fuck an A, that bitch is up and running again.

I couldn't find the right value cap online in the size I needed so I ordered a replacement from TEAC. They sell the replacement for $12.95.

Also, since I went ahead and bought an Alesis Masterlink I've been able to A/B these against each other. My 10-year-old kid's objective ears picked the Masterlink over the CD-RW700. My ears thought it was too close to call but that both seem to have great analog converters resulting in a great sound. The TASCAM is much more user friendly to someone like me that doesn't like screen scrolling. ML has a lot of on board tools and is overall a more comprehensive device.
