Any recommendation for MIDI sequencing software

Hey all- I'm looking for sequencer software (VST capable) that I want to use for drums tracks and prob. nothing else. I have samples for drums using SampleTank (I'm not absolutely fond of SampleTank, but I'm only using it for drum tracks).

I'm using Vegas 4 for the audio tracking, and I'm hoping there is some way to record the drums audio into Vegas. I'm fairly new to this type of thing, and look forward to any recommedations, thoughts, etc. I have an Audiophile 24/96 as my primary sound card as well.

What will be best to sequence drums, and record into Vegas?

I have never used vegas, but I would suggest Logic audio for sequencing and aranging midi, it is fully vst compatible and you can simply bounce the audio output from sampletank as an aif or wav and then use it in any audio software. might I also suggest ditching sampletank and playing around with reason, it is the king of loop tools.

Logic is a Mac only program now that Apple bought Emagic.

Cakewalk Home Studio or Sonar would work just fine for you and cost less. I think Cakewalk products would be the strongest in the MIDI department as they used to be one of the original companies to develop sequencing software in the days when they were still Twelve Tone Systems.

Logic 5 Platinum is about the best MIDI-wise for editing, but I agree with going to Cakewalk's Sonar 2 XL. I just switched. It is great, especially in the drum mapping department. The DR-008 drum machine is about the best. My only complaint is that you need a directx-VST wrapper to use Sampletank (Which I use for drums and bass). I think Cakewalk is going to fix that though. Oh and having MIDI effects is cool too.

But you can get the Logic Audio Big Box for about $250
Comes with Logic 5 (PC/Mac), and EXS24 Sampler (Awesome), EVP88, ES2 and EVOC20 Instruments.

Cakewalk has just released their bundle called: Project5 Soft Synth Workstation. About $300. Includes all kinds of synths and drum stuff. And now supports DX and VST. Sweet!!!

Thanks for the input all....

Looks like I have a little pondering to do. I really don't need anything fancy to accomplish what I need to - I'm only planning on sequencing drum tracks, that's it.

I really don't have the $$$ at this point (low end $100-150), and am hoping there is something out there that can let me do what I need to do.

Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 is going to be released later this month. It will have some of the Sonar 2.x features such as the drum grid for creating MIDI drum tracks. It will probably go for $60-70 retail.

I use Vegas for tracking and mixing, and I use CW for MIDI!

Buy an old version- save money!

MIDI leveled off at version 6.0 at which point they went to work trying to make the audio part of it actually function.

brzilian: Cakewalk looks pretty good...only thing is the VST support. Cakewalk seems to be avoiding that - unless you spend $60 for the DX wrapper to run VST instruments.

I've been evaluating Cubasis VST today, and have had zero troubles with latency, or the SampleTank engine. The interface isn't bad, but I'm use to SF products and was hoping Acid 4 could be used for MIDI - notta! Damn thing locks up everytime when I try to record MIDI tracks using a VST instrument.

drstawl: Maybe I'll look into an older version of CW as well - if I can save a couple bucks there, I can get the wrapper for VST. Pretty good MIDI in versions 5/6 or so? Also - Don't you love Vegas for tracking....Just got Vegas 4 and loving it.

Thanks....
