I'm using a p-3 1gig with windows 98 ,512m ram, aardvarkq-10, cubase VST32, waves plugins, wavelab 4.0, and it all works great together. I can get about 20 tracks with a reverb and a couple of compressers, track eq ect.. I'm thinking of getting a new amd-64 or p-4 660 and running it on windows 98 so I don't have to change all my software. Has anyone tried to run windows 98 in any of these two computers. Will the track count go up? Should I be able to have more fx plugs turned on? Let me know what you think.
Thanks

You shouldn't run into any problems with the AMD64 since it has 32-bit emulation. The P4, I'm not sure about because I've never dealt with any, but it should also be fine.
I can get about 40 tracks of audio, each with a compressor, and about 5 plugins on the main mix, and the system doesn't even flinch (I've never had a need to go above 40, and don't feel like taking the time to see how far it can go). I love my Athlon64 (it's even underclocked, awesome).
Personally, I'd go with the Athlon64. I'm biased towards AMD though, but you'll also be able to use 64-bit OSes without another upgrade.
Good luck in your decision!

nothing wrong with a new proc and Win98. Been using a P4 2.4 in a machine dual booting 98/XP for years now.

well some of the newer pc's do not have drivers for win98. It is possible but it will give you a hard time. mostly with the onboard USB controller and onboard NIC. Sometimes youll get unknown devices on your onboard devices. I've tried it before on a compaq p4 2.8gz. It doesnt quite work right.
