Just trying to keep up to date, havent heard much lately on anything new.... still gonna get the IWILL KK266, I believe, after new years, with a 1.4 ghz Athlon, per the prorec.com roll-your-own.

I would stay away from the KT133A chipsets - if you're going VIA, go with the KT266A chipsets, but that's just my vote.

Tomorrow (later today) I'll be installing my new AMD XP1600+ in a new Epox 8k7a+ mobo, with the AMD 761 chipset.

What kind of soundcard do you have? You may want to check with your soundcard manufacturer if it's something on the "prosumer" level. Aardvark was able to give me specific recommendations for chipsets and motherboards.

Good luck, and I'll letcha know how everything goes.

So would I, as a matter of fact I did!

I just picked up a Soltek SL-75DRV2 with some DDR RAM. It's rated as one of the best Athlon mobos by ww.tomshardware.com, with a KT266A chipset and some cool features. It's really an amazing board, and if you put in some Crucial RAM, I think you'll like it.

It's made a world of difference to me.

P.S I think the Athlon 1.4 is not available anymore, except as old stock. You should really go for the Athlon XP 1600+ or 1800+.

Merry Christmas

Soltek? Neither the name of the model number showed on pricewatch. Are you sure of that?
KaBudokan- Let me know what kind of track count/plug count you get out of that sucker... sounds fat... electroseller has some decent rackmount cases for around $89 without power supply, might wanna check em out if you ever plan on being mobile.
You gonna use Win2K I guess?

Damn, that Epox board is cheap ($69)... why that one?
I've totally lost track of this shit in the last 6 months, and theres a whole new breed of stuff. Whats the deal with the XP chips? The 1.5 XP is only $108 on pricewatch.
The MP is for dualies, right? Fill me in, and gimmee some links.
Thanks.

OK, when I was last poking around with this stuff, DDR was just hitting, but not catching on entirely. Has it improved? Does it outperform standard RAM by much now? And what is 3DDR/6?
Man, I have a LOT of catching up to do. Geezus....

Sorry. The Soltek is not sold in the USA.

Try the Asus A7V266-E with RAID. OR the Soyo Dragon Plus. Cool looking board.

DDR is amazing, about two-three times the performance of SDR. You can actually get modules real cheap in the US. I bought my DDR at a little below the price of RDRAM.

I guess you got hold of the links, since you're posting so many. Let me know if you need anything else on this.

Is the DDR finally showing THAT much performance increase? Last year I bought 2 Asus boards with AMD 760 chipsets, with pc2100 ddr, and at the time the increase was only like 5-10%. I'm hoping it has gotten more mature, but I cant imagine three times the performance. I hope you;re right though....
Yeah, I did alot of catching up... I knew all this stuff inside out 6 months ago, and now I'm starting to again.
Thanks for the help....

Well, OK, maybe only in benchmarks it's showing me twice the bandwidth. But the KT266A is far superior to the AMD chipsets. I guess since I went for a full upgrade (CPU, a new Athlon XP+1500, mobo, Graphics card and RAM) I notced the huge improvement. I had a pretty wimpy Duron system earlier, based on SDRAM....

All the best! let me know what you finally went for. The MSI looks to be a good board too, with USB 2.0 and RAID onboard.
