I have never seen an MD player with optical output (only input), but have a ton of live music on MD that would love to upload to my computer. Someone told me that the old non-portable units from a few years ago may have had them?

I've tried the analog route and am not so happy with the hiss that results.

Thanks

The Sony MDS-JE510 has optical in & out.

It is a unit that was manufactured about 5 years ago, and is not currently sold as new. Ebay is your best resource on that. AAMOF, I just picked up a second JE510 off Ebay for $66 + s/h. I've had a JE510 since about 1998 as original owner, new equipment, but I just decided I wanted a second one. Originally, the MDS-JE510 sold for about $299.

Price and condition vary, as with all Ebay sales of electronic equipment.

The Sony MDS-JE500 and MDS-JE520 are comparable units to the JE510, all sporting optical I/O and even S/P-dif I/O on RCA jacks, (switchable digital/analog). These are "console" -type recorders, and not walkman-type.

Sony MZ-1 has an optical out...

Hey.

I was able to "permanently borrow" a friend's Sony MZ-1 "Portable" MiniDisc Recorder/Player. This unit is probably about 8 years old, and it's pretty and heavy when compared to current portable MD recorders. But his unit has digital in and outs - very rare. I use it to digitally transfer recordings made on my Sharp MT-99 MiniDisc Recorder into my computer and/or my external CD Recorder. The only caveat is that the MZ-1 only records/plays at standard speed - if you record something in SP2 or LP mode on another recorder, then you won't be able to play it on the MZ-1.

Keep on eye on eBay for a used MZ-1 - it works well for me.
