any GT-6 users out there?

Howdy, all. Since the GT-6 has a few different places to set the volume (dial on back, patch dial on top, internal settings in preamps, master, etc), not to mention your amp's volume control, are there any recommended settings for best sound, signal to noise ratio, etc.?

I know that POD recommends you crank the master volume and adjust everything else after -- just wondered if BOSS or any of you had any similar advice? Let me know. Thanks!

J

P.S. Any suggestions on getting a nice thick metal tone (ala Sevendust, etc) are more than welcome as well...

Hi there...

I am a former GT-6 user, but I sold it for a POD and now a V-Amp Pro as well.
I can't remember how my settings for volume were, so I can't help you there.

The Nice thick metal tone, though, is a matter of using the 2x2 chorus, with 0 depth and everything. The only paramters you should mess around with are the pre-delays. That is THE trick to fattening up the sounds on the GT-6. I never got a really good distortion out of the damn thing, before I tried that 2x2 trick...

Let us know if that helps...

There's a Yahoo users group I used to frequent, it had plenty of good advice.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GT-6/

They even have a patch library section where you can download other folks sounds onto your computer. If you connect your GT-6 to your computer using a MIDI cable, you can edit the patches on your computer and download them to your GT-6. It's a great way to work.

What is your take on the V-Amp Pro compared to the POD?

Dime, thanks for the tone tips -- I'll give that a listen. Funny, we seem to have the same taste in gear -- I also have a POD2 and a V-AMP Pro. Just using the GT6 for live...

Phyl -- I've actually posted out there a few times (including this 'volume' question just a few days ago) and have been completely ignored. I figured I'd try out here since I know this board is very active and helpful.

Ed -- If I can add my two cents, I was surprised by how good the V-AMP sounds. I haven't toyed with the V-AMP enough to know if it's actually better than the POD (which I've sworn by for a while), but I'm leaning that way... If you don't have either, I'd go with the V-AMP for more 'bang for your buck' (it's about $150 less than the POD).

Any other thoughts on the volume thing? Thanks.

J

I currently have both the POD 2.0 and the POD Pro (as well as a rack of other stuff). While they both work well, it always good to keep an open mind to new gear which might offer other improved options for either live or direct.

I understand your confusion. There are so many parameters to adjust and it can be hard to know where to start.

The tweakers among us tend to lock themselves in a room for a week and turn every dial everywhich way until they have the whole thing figured out.

Those of us with limited time tend to look for stock patches that are close to what we want and then do minor adjustments to get the tone right for our uses.

As to your original question, my recommendations would be as follows:

1) adjust pre-amp settings first to get the right mix of distortion and tone.

2) Use the patch dial to get all your patches the same volume, it's irritating to be on stage and have your volume change drastically when changing patches.

3) Use the volume control on the back only to get a good level going into your power amp.

One last thing, I tended to get better distorted sounds by leaving the overdrive section OFF and turning up the pre-amp volume parameter.

...ohh by the way....
I just remembered, that I used a Distortion pedal into a clean amp???
I believe I used the Metalzone model going into a Clean Fender model of some kind... That into the 2x2 chorus as described above...
That was the best metal tone I could knock out of the GT-6... and it wasn't that good, in my oppinion....

As for the POD II vs. V-Amp Pro :
I think the Behringer kicks the POD's little red a**!!!! For getting Metal tones that Behringer thing is the absolutely best investment I have ever made....
Now I just need some kind of midi-controlled, programmable singlechannel EQ to use as a pre-EQ. Any suggestions here???

Dime...

I agree with you, Ed. That's why I picked up the VAMP-Pro (and I'm glad I did)...

Thanks for the suggestions, Phyl. After setting the preamp tone, do you think I should have either the patch or unit volume cranked? I'm wondering if it's built (as the POD is) to give you the best tone or s/n ratio when the unit is all the way up...

And Dime, I've seen a lot of presets using the pedals instead of the preamps, so I'll give that a shot. Do you have any mp3 online of the tone you're describing? If you wanna check what I've done with the POD, in terms of metal tone, you can take a listen at www.mp3.com/30SoS.

The best advice I can give is to use your ears.

After getting a good tone I tend to set the patch output level at mid range. As an electrical engineer, I don't like running any circuit with its output set to the maximum level because that's when a circuit will distort the most, and usually not in a "good" way.

If by unit volume you mean the master volume on the back of the unit, I would set it to insure that what ever outboard amp you are using is getting a strong enough signal. The best way to gauge this would be to pick a clean tone and turn up the unit volume until your power amp starts to distort, then back off a little. I'm assuming you are connecting the GT-6 out to a power amp input or using the effect loop on a regular guitar amp, the GT-6 isn't meant to drive the front panel input of a guitar amp.

If I seem a little fuzzy on the GT-6 controls it's because I sold mine about a year ago. I only used it for back up while gigging, my main unit was (and still is) the Roland GP-100.
