and good tube compressors you guys reccomend for around 500? or should I just go with a solid state unit like the RNP (people seem to really love this unit). I would love someting tube but in the $500 price range are they just gonna be crap?

any suggestions would be great

Nathan

I think the ART pro vla is a fine tube comp. I have also heard good things about the hbb fatman stuff

I'll second the Pro VLA. For $400 or so, it's a steal.

Why not get both

The RNP is a pre amp; the RNC is a compressor.

For your $500 budget:

I'd go with the ART Pro VLA (I guess that thirds it :) ) - $329.95 http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=1086&Category=Audio_Processors

With the money left over you can get an RNC as well - http://www.sloca.com/default.asp?section=Processing&group=Compressor

Another option in approximately that price range is the TLA Ivory series compressor. The original was Ivory series 1, but they have a new verson now that's part of the Ivory 2 series. That or the ART Pro Vla would probably be your best choices for a low cost tube compressor.
