Any good rack gear for Computer Recording?

Is there any rack gear that I may need or that would be beneficial in my computer recording setup. I know programs like Cubase VST have built in compressers, effects, etc. but should I buy any rack gear for my setup?

Yes, mic preamps, and outboard compressors (to reduce peaks during tracking) will make a big difference in your sound quality... My recommendation would be to search the rack forum and the mic forum for info on these two devices...

You should not need to post a "I need a preamp" thread, because there are many good threads about this already.

I currently have a mixer with a mic pre, but do I still need another one? What exactly is the role of a mic pre and an outboard compresser in the recording setup?
