Any cheap video editing software...

I would like to play around with some video editing software, but I am not ready to invest in something like Vegas yet. Does anyone use or know of some relatively cheap or free software for experimentation? I would like to integrate a couple of audio tracks, but nothing huge and spectacular. Basically, something to play around with and see if it is to my liking.

Sonic Foundry's Video Factory is basically Vegas Lite and costs around $75. It's great

Isn't that what demos are for? Though you really can't go wrong with Vegas.
